Re: HD relay conversion headlight harness available!
Ok...finally got my attachments to work. My harness includes flame retardant corrugated loom, replacement rosebud wire loom retainers, MIDI 40A fuse holder and fuse as well as HD relays mounted in mountable relay bases-this dual relay setup is equipped with the 4HI option as well and is diode protected against voltage spiking. You can see the difference between OEM 18 gauge leads and the Delphi SXL 14 gauge supply leads.

Can you build one of these for a 2002 Chevy 1500hd?

Re: HD relay conversion headlight harness available!
I've just wrapped up benchtesting my first few harnesses for 99-05 trucks-if you want, I can put you on my call list when I have them ready to ship.....? Let me know....I'll figure pricing when they are reading to ship.

Re: HD relay conversion headlight harness available!
Can you make a harness like Baron's only with the mountable relay sockets and longer grounds. The grounds could be as long as the 2 positive leads and have heavy duty 3/8" eyelets on them
For my 1994 through 1998 6.5 diesels?

Re: HD relay conversion headlight harness available!
That's how my harnesses are built-I replicate the GM harness down to including rosebud clips and supplying a 275F heat/flame resistant corrugated conduit to replace your original one. It's as stout as you can get. 14ga is the largest wire size the 280-series metri-pak terminals will accept too-otherwise I'd go with 12Ga but, I've had several members comment on the kit with better than expected performance. I have the 88-98 harnesses in stock as well as 81-87 and 73-80.

Re: HD relay conversion headlight harness available!
Does your 88-98 harness have 3 relays? Does it plug into the existing headlight plugs to trigger the relays?
I liked Baron's harness, except that he has mounted relays instead of mounted relay sockets & his ground connections were way to short. In the pictures, your harness did not look like his.

Re: HD relay conversion headlight harness available!
No, my harness has 2 relays to keep it simple....and I make use of a blocking diode for the 4-HI feature thus no need for a 3rd relay. As for the wiring itself, once installed there is never any need to go back to stock.....I doubt anybody would actually keep their old, dilapidated 18ga wiring to go back to stock-if anything its a great selling point if you opt to sell your truck down the road. No, my kit is designed to splice into the OEM wiring just behind the LH headlight on the inner fender-there is a 1/2" loom that is an ideal spot for adding my harness-from that point forward, it is designed to replace your entire headlight wiring-you need to separate out the parking and turn sig. wiring and put them inside your new flameproof loom that I provide-and I include new clips since your old ones will most likely break off once you try to remove them.
HD 12ga. power feed goes to alt. charge post to provide power to the 40 and 50 amp rated relays and it is protected by an MIDI 40A fuse and screw down holder for a clean, modern appearance. Wire length is a match to the OEM GM harness with the exception of larger, HD 14ga leads to the lights from the relays and proper sized and lengthened ground with HD eyelets to secure exactly where the OEM harness did. Since I incorporate the diode protection within the harness, you can substitute either of the 2 relays for a standard 5 pin style should you ever need to. The relays mount inside a mountable base so its easy to swap them out. And no need to worry what type of relay you need-the harness has the 4-HI feature built-in. I provide commercial grade ones in the kit which are rated at 250,000 switching cycles-I doubt you'll ever need to replace one barring some kind of physical attack on them....lol |

Re: HD relay conversion headlight harness available!
I like the plug and play feature better than the splicing in feature.
Makes it easier if we have a vehicle go down for the last time. I can just unplug and plug it into the next vehicle. I assumed the blocking diode was the reason why you only used 2 relays. I always wondered why Baron never did that. Question - It seems to me that a 40 amp fuse would be a little large for the wiring? Please explain. Is it the difference between 12 volt and 120 volt? Thanks

Re: HD relay conversion headlight harness available!
No....40A is the rating I use just in case somebody wants to upgrade to true HID's or really high output composite headlamps. I thought about building it as a plug n play but imo it looks too messy. I like to keep a stock "appearance". The headlamps will only draw what they are designed to-no more, so 40A is a safe amount of protection. The relays are overrated for the given application but that is meant to ensure a long life. These are not your general parts store relays however in a pinch you can use one if you had to.

Re: HD relay conversion headlight harness available!
I'm still confused by the fuse amp to wiring interaction. Wouldn't 14 ga. wire self destruct, before it blows the 40 amp fuse?

Re: HD relay conversion headlight harness available!
14ga is usually good up to 50A, 12ga up to 75A, 10ga up to 100A, ect. Incidentally, the headlamp wires are outputs from the relays....input protection to fused relays is 12ga....maybe that's the confusion?

I am still not figuring it out
http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/am...uge-d_730.html The last chart made it clear to me. http://www.tessco.com/yts/industry/p...get_wired.html

Re: HD relay conversion headlight harness available!
Lol....I was just looking for a chart like that to post. With the relatively short runs of wire, I wasn't too concerned about the voltage loss since I build my harnesses with a degree of overkill in mind.

Re: HD relay conversion headlight harness available!
I would like to add that even though my kits are designed as a stock appearing harness, I can build to suit, so if its plug adapters you wish to have then I can build them for you this way. The cost is the same-the cost of the adapters is offset since you won't require additional wiring and less conduit. Let me know, thanks!

Re: HD relay conversion headlight harness available!
It will be til after we get our tax mess straightened out before I can order.
I would like to order for 3 more vehicles. I like the plug and play and 3/8' eyelets on the ground and positive termination wires. I do the Allen screw/ battery bolt mod on the side post batteries so adding 3/8" eyelets is easy for me. I also have all diesel so my kit needs to mount on the drivers / left side. If you could duplicate Baron's harness with longer ground wires - or just one ground wire to go to the battery. - I didn't quite understand why he had 2 incredibly short ground wires, instead of tying them together to run back to the battery - to match the length of the hot wire or longer with 3/8 eyelets and your mountable relay sockets it would be good.

Re: HD relay conversion headlight harness available!
I understand. Well, PM me whenever you're ready-I have your requests noted so I'm ready to build them to your specifications and obviously if you plan on ordering 3 kits, I'll cut you a break on the price as well. Keep in touch-thanks!

Re: HD relay conversion headlight harness available!
I just bought a 99 C2500 7.4 Suburban. I understand they have a ground issue for the lights, but could you explain what the brighter lights and benefit of your harness. PM if it would be easier. Thanks, Dan

Re: HD relay conversion headlight harness available!
Hey, Dan. The ground issue you have IMO is not a result of the factory wiring design-you must have something else going on. On an otherwise trouble free lighting circuit, running low and high beams through relays relieve the headlight switch from having to carry the voltage load. When upgrading to HID style bulbs for example, current demand goes up but the headlight switch has a built in ballast to restrict current so it ends up getting a lot hotter as the higher intensity bulbs try to pull more and more current.
The 4-HI mod for this circuit allows you to retain all 4 lights on all the time-even when running factory fog lights. DOT regulations state that for street/highway use you are only allowed 4 forward facing lights to be on at any one time. That's why all aftermarket lighting companies state "for off road use only"....its sort of a legal disclaimer for them. I build my lighting harnesses with the 4-HI as integrated or as a connect-disconnect feature depending on what you want. And since I build harnesses full time, I give you the option of either a headlight splice harness kit or a firewall a forward replacement lighting harness. |
