66 steering box Problem
Hello all. D here! New member so if this post has been discussed before or belongs somewhere else I apologize in advance.
My first vintage GM Vehicle, 1966 C10 suburban, Needs a new steering box. Every mail order shop, as well as the Chevy Truck Shop, etc, has only one listing for 1960 to 1966 chevy truck steering box. Bought one from the chevy shop and it is not right. It is the same as one I saw on a 61 truck. I am told a different box was used on 64-66 trucks. Is this true, why are they so hard to find, and if so, where can I find a rebuilt one?? Any help would be appreciated. "D" |

Re: 66 steering box Problem
What's different about it? I thought 60-66 used the same box. Since no one makes these new, any you get are rebuilt units. Maybe the box you got is the incorrect one (wrong part in box, mislabeled). Not many places do rebuilds on manual boxes anymore. There is not a big supply of them anymore for rebuilders either and most people want to swap over to power steering.
Rockauto.com has a listing for one. Same one for 61 and 66.

Re: 66 steering box Problem
The box they gave me is correct for a 61, that i have seen, but not my 66. I just got an email from 4-5-6 chevy with a picture that matches my box. The gentleman says it is for a 64 to 66. and everything seems correct. I guess I'll order from him. But I'm still puzzled about the confusion?? If i were to try to mount the 60-66 box the steering shaft would be too short??

Re: 66 steering box Problem
You may want to read up on 4-5-6. They have had a few issues. Post a picture of the box you have. Are you sure it is the box?

Re: 66 steering box Problem
If it was me, I'd have the original rebuilt by these guyshttp://www.redheadsteeringgears.com/ If you buy from Tony, I'd pay a little extra and have the part sent UPS C.O.D

Re: 66 steering box Problem
Thanks for the info. Since I'm still learning about my sub. Is there any raason that a 67 box would be on a 66? There are no other mount holes to indicate it was swapped in place of a different part, and the upper shaft has not been cut? Chevy shop's 67 box seems close but the case is a bit different. We're they made by different manufacturers? Again thank you all for the help!

Re: 66 steering box Problem
I think I still have my 66 manual steering box. Was going to throw it out but occasionally get to Seattle so maybe will recycle it there http://www.redheadsteeringgears.com/ if they want it.

Re: 66 steering box Problem
Can't answer your question but that's a nice looking vehicle.
One thing I can offer is if it has the same steering column as a 66 fleetside a collapsible steering shaft from a 67 will work in that column. I used that and the PS box from a 67 with an added mounting bracket and am quite happy with it. Looks like your power assist setup off the pitman arm may have been added at a later date. |

Re: 66 steering box Problem
No. I changed the proportioning valve and hoses myself. The ram and all hardware were old and crusty as are the rest of the parts. But Thanks for letting me know what box to get. If the telescoping steering column spoken of has a small rubber boot towards the top of the shaft, then, that is the one I have. Wish me luck lol!! Who knows what else I will find!
