'63 GMC Suburban in the UK

I've been lurking around here for a short while and it's time to de-lurk and say hello from sunny (well, it is today!) old England. In the great tradition of most of my cars, I've bought another one that has absolutely zero parts support in the UK.

Luckily, this one is in great shape so I don't need to spend countless hours on the 'net tracking down obscure parts! I can claim no credit for the car - a well known guy over here named Stuart Revell deserves the credit for getting this Californian refugee into the great shape she's in now. All I did was handed over some cash!

There are very few 60-66 Suburbans over here in Blighty and even fewer are GMCs - nice to head out to shows knowing that there won't be a dozen similar rides there.

Anyway, I'm happy to have found this lovely Suburban and to have found this place too. Look out for a flood of dumb questions in the very near future ;-)

Timo

Re: '63 GMC Suburban in the UK

I didnt know the rear seats were pointed backward either, is that common or just an exception?

The seats were originally all facing forward with the middle row being the double seat. When the chassis was notched, the seats were switched around so that the rear seat passengers don't have to sit with their feet on the 'hump' that covers the notch.

It actually makes for a pretty practical setup with the two full rows up front. The rear facing seat seems to already belong to Ted, my Schnauzer :-)

Had a look today: Dana 44 Powr Lok

That fits with what the seller advertised it as, unlike the trans which he said was a Powerglide but is actually a TH400 and suits me just fine!

How did he manage to not notice the extra gear?

Welcome to the forum. What a beautiful ride. I don't remember ever seeing a GMC suburban with the deluxe side window trim before. I would assume it's relatively rare even in America. Nice to see everything is in such great condition. Have fun!

Thanks Captainfab,

Yep - it the 305E V6

My first thought when I heard V6 was to:

1. Recoil in horror
2. Start planning for an SBC transplant
3. Look up GMC V6 on the 'net
4. Stare at the words 'low revving load lugging truck engine with close to zero BHP' and despair

When I drove it back to my place after I bought it, it took me less than 50 miles to decide that the V6 is staying exactly where it is! Maybe it's the combination of the TH400 and Rochester 2Jet but it pulls like a train and cruises along just fine at 65-70. It could use a taller rear end to drop the cruising revs down a little but that can wait until the winter layup. Maybe an overdrive trans would do the trick? I'll do some calcs and work it out.

One idea that I just can't get out of my head is low pressure turbocharging. I used to design race engines for rally cars and I've done a bunch of turbo conversions - the motor looks like a prime candidate for a turbo from a diesel application (spools up fast at low revs). Rock solid rotating assembly, pistons with plenty of meat above the top ring land and a stock cam with very little overlap would make it largely a bolt-on exercise.
