When does your truck red line?

When i floor it it shifts from second to thrid at about 4000-4100 rpm, and i have never had it higher then that.

it just seems like a low rpm for a red line (well what i consider red line)

what can your guys' engine do?

You can get an adjustable vacuum modulator for your transmission which will allow you to adjust the shift point.

Depends. 4100 isn't very steep for a stock engine designed for torque over horsepower. I had an old 350 of some sort in my '79 Monte Carlo. Early 70's engine, I found out it came out of a *bus.* 300+ on torque, but only 165hp. I could tow a truck with that car, but the engine wouldn't make any power beyond 4000 RPM at all.

Actually, the vacume modulator isn't going to do anything in this instance. When you floor it, vacume drops to near 0 and the shifting is controlled by the kick down cable and the gonenor weights.

Is your kickdown cable hooked up to the carb?

A bone stock 350 is usually limited by the ignition. HEI module usually drops out by 5,000 rpm. That's also around where the valve springs start to "float", they don't have the ability to reseat the valves between strokes fast enough. You also run into airflow problems with the heads around 5,000 rpm. If you fix these areas the bottom end is usually good for around 6,000 rpm.

the kick down is hooked up and works, I have HEI. the engine was out to a late 60's muscle car, rebuilt put in a sprint car, rebiult again and put in the truck, then i bought the truck put on performer intake and edelbrock 650 (i think, maybe 550) carb... so i really dont know what is inside the engine, but is a c-20 and it was a custom camper truck, till i got a hold of it...

If I slam and floor my 67 it will shift around 4500 RPM, but my 00 Z71 will go all the way to about 5000 if I floor it before it shifts.

350 Chevy V8, 4-bolt mains, with the following mods:
Machining work done by Terry Walters precision engines, Roanoke, VA.
Bored .030 over = 355 cubic inch
Align bored
Parallel top of block
New cam bearings
New freeze plugs
New hypereutectic pistons, flat top
Reconditioned connecting rods
Crankshaft main and rod journals ground .010 under
Rotating assembly balanced
Double roller timing chain
Melling high volume, high pressure oil pump (Melling M55-HV oil pump?)
Speed Pro cam: Intake 224 deg dur, .450” lift; Exhaust 224 deg dur, .460” lift
New hydraulic lifters and push rods
World Industries part #012250-1 Sportsman II cylinder heads with 72cc chambers (9.5 to 1 compression), stainless steel valves 2.02 intake, 1.6 exhaust, heavy-duty valve springs, screw-in studs, guide plates

Crane part #11744-16 roller rocker arms (Rollers on both fulcrum and tip)
EdelbrockÂ* # 1470 750 CFM 4-barrel carburetor
Edelbrock performer RPM aluminum intake manifold
HEI distributor (Late-70’s style)
Dyna-max Headers
Â*
Note: For correct tune-up parts, such as spark plugs, cap, rotor, coil, plug wires, use parts made for a 1979 Chevy C10 pickup 350 Cu in. engine. This also applies to accessories such as the alternator, water pump, thermostat, radiator, clutch disk, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and transmission. The power steering pump and gearbox are from a 1985 Chevy truck.

Previous Owner rebuilt it and set it up. He said with the work done on it and the balanced rotating parts it has a 6500 red line. I've had it there maybe twice. I use 6000 as the red line and usually shift at 5500 or so. It pulls very strong all the way to 6500. I just don't want to over rev it and have the engine eat itself.

406 I built in a 77 Impala back in HS. redline unknown, I hit just over 8K MANY times. add in the 2.28:1 gears & all the open interstate one could ask for. I guess I was trying to duplicate Allinson's Talledega scenario (dumba$$ me). I just cant figure out why the TH350 trannys kept spitting parts. huh?!

but your problem sounds like you need to tune the trans governor.

Sounds about right. When I'm doing 65 in mine I'm just under 3k. Anyone know what the redline is on a 250 L6?

Mike

my 96 would shift itself at 5500 rpm's, my stock 305 would shift itself around 3500 at the most, but when i manually shifted it i would go about 4200 rpms, i haven't had my 357 that long , i rebuilt it , and then last weekend i put another carb on it, most i have had it to is 5000, but it only has around 40 miles on it, my friends 96 has been reprogrammed and his 96 shifts at 6000

I had a 75 nova with a 250 L6 in neutral if you floor it it would hold 4800 like it had a rev limiter I was tring to blow it up before droping a 305 in it. I drove it around the block a few times in first gear pedal on the floor and all it did was get me funny looks from the neighbors.
