Info. On a 12 bolt
looking to buy a 12 bolt from a 71 or 72, but how can I I.D. the rearend to make sure I don't buy the wrong rearend?

5 lug axles of course, plus the canted axle saddles for trailing arm and also the panhard bar spud.
If you see those three items, you've found your 71-72 rearend.

I have a rear axle out of a 71 truck....look for casing numbers on the gear housing....mine has NF 3896838 near the fill plug.....also if you cannot get the gear cover off, look on top of the passenger axle tube should be a code there to tell ya what gear ratio and if it's a posi along with other data....or spin the wheel and count the revolution the driveshaft makes makes....

i'd want the rear cover removed to see the condition and check the ratiio of 40 year old gears before i'd buy

Ok I have another question. I've read that the 71-72 rearends are wider then the 67-70 rearends. How much wider are they? Will It be a problem later if I want to put rims on it?

1.5" total....3/4" each side....it all depends on what wheel you want to run

X 2 FOR ME HERE...
The 1.5 inches is nothing to get wrapped up in. Think of it this way, your truck will be the stock 71-72 truck width. If you put a 67-70 truck next to a 71-72 truck you'd be able to notice the wider stance by comparing the two but lacking the direct comparison, it's not noticeable. A set of 8 inch truck rallys fit perfectly. I think the narrower 67-70 truck stance looks a little too narrow myself and 71-72 look ideal.
