I have a 71 and I know the easiest and most visable way to tell a 71 from a 72 is the rearview mirror mounting and the door panels.

what about 69-70, and 67-68. What are the obvious differences so I can make new friends and impress others?

67-78....all I know is this: some of the 67's had a small back window and all of them came without the front chrome trim "eyebrows". It an be confusing though, because some of the '68's also lack that trim and some of the '67s also have large back windows

Can't help you on a 69-70 trucks. I really like the 67-70's. I think the '71 and '72s are ugly as sin. Something about the front end on the 67-70'2 just really makes it look seriously hot.

All 68's have side markers while 67's don't (Most of them are just reflectors in 68). Many 68's have white face and extra chrome trim around the front lip of the hood and fenders. 68's have grey painted wheels and poverty hub caps. (68 Hub caps have orange/black highlights) Most 67's have either body colored wheels or black wheels with white poverty hub cabs (Except orange bowtie and highlights.) 68's have later style arm rests and somewhat different options availibility.

69-70 are the hardest for me to tell apart. I'm pretty sure that the style of the plastic inner grill was different. I believe one year had a grid, and the other had louvres. It's hard to tell from a distance.

oh, & get this, my rear view mirror is screwed to the roof with 2 screws & a stamped metal piece. the mirror is a simple laminated unit with no day/night control. the glass part is about 3"x5". WTF???
as far as 69-70 goes, didnt they switch to a throttle cable in 70?

Throttle cable in 71. 70 still used the rod.

Although you visually can't see it, the 70 also has the wider rear axle like the 71/72 (about 1" wider if I remember). But yes the 69 and 70 are the hardest to tell apart, because visually the only difference is the inner grill pattern and they neven made 70 replacements, so if the inner grill was ever replaced, dealer or otherwise, they got the 69 innner grill (egg-crate style). The 70 has 9 rows (i think) of little chrome trim pieces.

I also believe all 70's had side marker light standard, instead of reflectors.

Some 68's did have the old style arm rests. Fine69's old 68 one ton dump truck had them.
The flat style mirror arm... it probably isn't original. The mirror was an option untill 70 when it became base model equipment.

There are alot of differences between the 67 and 68. The first and most obvious is the side marker lights which has been mentioned. Second, 67's had a small back window standard with a big back window as an option. The grill area was painted body color with the trim and headlght bezels painted white or the polished aluminum in 67. The 68 grill area was painted white to please government standards(they were supposed to be easier to see) with painted steel or aluminum trim and bezels. Many people repaint the grill area body color with aluminum trim for a cleaner look so this is easier to tell on original unpainted trucks.

Interior differences are few. The 67's carried alot over from 66 models. The vent window handles are the same and alot(not all) had armrests from the 66.
The ignition swith bezel was smaller in 67.

67 was the last year for the 283. The 68 was the first year available with a BB and the 307 SB. It was also the last year for the 327 SB.

As mentioned before, the only difference in the 69 and 70 is the inner grill, the wider axles, and another difference is late 69 and all 70 models used the bigger 605 power steering box.

The 69 and 70 also carried the 396 name badge but they were 402's. The 71-71 models had the 400 badge with a 402 BB, but never had a 400 SB. Most people know this but I've actually seen guys almost get in fist fights over the 400 option.

Far as I remember, factory was painted, but they only make the aluminum or polished as replacements.

Not official, but I have never seen a factory 71 with a rod. Also, the assembly manual shows them with a cable.

So, this too may be a dumb question but what about the bowtie on the front of the hood vs. in the middle of the grille? I saw a truck almost like my '71 but the bowtie was centered on the front of the hood.??

edit: my '71 has a cable, not a rod but it also has a 400sb so cable could have been during the transition.
