mystery problem
I have a 99 GMC Sierra. Today I had to go get it off the side of the road because it had died on my wife. I got it started & it was knocking and smoking & would not idle. It would die any time I let off the gas & the breaks would not want to work. I got about a block down the road & the battery acted like it was dead & didn't even have enough juice to roll up the windows I checked the battery & it was holding charge. I took the alternator out & took it to autozone & they say it passed. I have no idea what's wrong so I was hoping someone here would know.

are they power brakes? Did the vacumn line to the brake booster come loose or split? Sounds like a massive vacumn leak to me.

but how would a vacuum line cause it to not run & drain my battery to where it won't start

Vacumn line will definately make it not run. I suspect the battery issue is a byproduct and will go away with the vacumn line fix. Ck the vacumn line fromr the brake booster to the rrear of your manifold.

I checked the vac line and it looked good. Any other suggestions on what the problem could be?

Fuel pressure regulator possibly. Little diaphragm on the fuel rail, drivers side. Has a little vacuum line running to it, yank it off and see if the line is wet on the inside with gas. (It shouldnt be)

I would also suggest checking your grounds to the engine as well as the battery cables

I think the battery is coincedence. They crap out this time of year... I vote for a broken valve spring. I fix a bunch of these for that. Do a compression check to verify. if you have a intake spring break you will have no vacuum for brakes and will barley run. if you dont have a gauge remove valve covers and inspect for broken spring. It takes like 10 mins a side and usually the rubber gasket it reusable. I may be way off base with this. Its fresh in my mind from fixing one yesterday,.

I'm just going to have to get it to my shop & yank the engine, I planned on doing a complete overhaul anyway. This will just give me an excuse lol.
