I’m looking into getting my plates done by a professional shop that specializes in this kind of work. I’ve checked around a bit but there seems to be some major differences in pricing and procedure.(clear coat ..powder coating vs. paint...etc...) Can anybody recommend a place? Any information would be helpfull.

ALPCA (Automobile License Plate Collectors Ass'n) has a number of vendors listed on their website who do restoration. It's an interesting site, even if you don't have one of them to do yours. I think it is www.alpca.org. You can Goggle 'em.

Some states require them to be unmodified, might want to check regulations

Looks like you can order replacement plates in the original yellow on black from the DMV:
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/plates/standardplates.htm

You have to surrender your original plates though.

I sent mine here. I was driving the truck and needed plates so I sent them one at a time. Great people to deal with. I love the job they did.

Also, make sure you specify if you want satin or gloss black. what you see in mine is satin I think; it was a year ago when I had them done.
I will admit I was very worried about sending off my plates and not ever seeing them again. I have heard about so many flakes. Out there. But I have to say, I enjoy those restored plates as much as anything else on the truck!

Thats where I sent mine, top notch work. I know the finished pic is small, however, trust me they are perfect... like brand new.

I had a really nice tag, that I bought at a swap meet, that I traded him (plus cash to boot) for a tag that he had restored already.

The finished product looks good, it almost seems though with some time and patience someone could do it themselves and save some dinero

Well it really varies, any where from $80-$150+ per plate.

I know the guy that did mine charges $60 w/o doing any repairing. He's a sign painter/pinstripe/airbrush guy. I straightened my own,he's a friend,and I've given him things before so mine were free. But,what I was asking is how much did the jibs that members have shown cost them. This would be helpful information pertaining to this thread

There's a shop in Gilroy ca that makes plates. I had a set made for $200. they came out great and even had the 63 stamped in the corner. I'll post a pic this weekend when I get to the shop

Well kinda, the only resemblance seems to be the color scheme. Some have reported seeing samples that are reflective, plates are flat (Alpha/numerals are not raised), font is way different, are among the comments. Between the YOM program and these, if they ever really go on sale, it will drive the cost of real vintage plates higher than they are now. I think a lot of folks are going to be disappointed, except maybe the PT Cruiser clubs.

It's funny,I had a '55 wagon registered Historic back in the '80s. I sold the car and still had the Historic tags with an '85 sticker. I screwed it up on my shop with all the other old tags and metal signs. Probably made a bird house out of the front one. Now,almost 30 years later I have an '85 Jimmy registered historic and those would have been perfect. Never figured back then the modern age tags with stickers would come of anything...let alone the vehicles. I like finding more unique YOM tags,like Historic or the Farm Truck ones I have on my '72

Got my plates back and couldn’t be happier.
$80.00 per plate, no hidden charges. Nice guy to work with. Notified me when plates arrived and kept me informed with the progress.
