Pictures of stock 47/48 side gas filler neck?

Does anyone have access to pics of a stock fuel filler in the bed from a 47/48 AD truck? I'm trying to duplicate the look, and I'd like to first know what that look is...

Does it use the same rubber grommet as the cab filler ones (3" diameter hole)?

Thanks!

My '52 is sitting on a S-10 chassis with the stock 20 gallon tank. I cut a hole in the side of the bed then added the '52 stock rubber grommet and modified the '52 filler tube to fit. Looks like it belongs there.

Re: Pictures of stock 47/48 side gas filler neck?

Thanks guys, this is what I'm looking for.

52, that is exactly what I'm intending to do. I have mine on an extended cab s10 frame and I've cut 2.375" from the front of a long box for mine. Just wondered what to do for the grommet, now I know. Do you ever have any problems with gas coming out the cap when the tank is full?

Re: Pictures of stock 47/48 side gas filler neck?

No leaks at all. It's just an S-10 tank, mounted in the stock location on the S-10 frame with a modified filler neck. Not much different then a normal S-10.

After exploring all the options, this is the same approach I'm taking myself.

Cheers,
Ted.

The normal s10 (at least my 95 did) has what looks to be a check valve in the filler neck, just wondering if I should try to keep this. It looks like if you fill it so full, the ball will float up and keep gas from coming out the filler and on the side of the truck. Sounds like this may be a non-issue. Or, did you weld this to your original 52 filler neck? If I could come up with a nice plain round chrome cap for the s10 filler neck I'd just shorten that and use it...

Re: Pictures of stock 47/48 side gas filler neck?

I took the stock '52 filler neck and cut it off a couple inches below the cap. Then I took the stock S-10 filler neck and cut the cap end off just above the small drain back tube. Then I welded the '52 cap end onto the S-10 filler tube. So, basically it's a stock S-10 filler tube with the end piece from the '52. It's all connected to the tank with the stock S-10 rubber hose.

I don't know what this check valve thing is you're talking about. I've had lots of S-10's and never saw anything like that on any of mine. There is a small flapper inside the stock S-10 filler, but all late model vehicles have that.

Here's something to think about before you guys go this route. When the fuel tank is mounted in the stock S-10s location, the driver's side exhaust now has to go over to the passenger side. This makes running dual exhaust a real pain. If I had to do it over again, I'd mount a tank with a rear filler in (78-88 G-body or similar) between the frame rails at the rear of the truck. Then you could put the fuel filler behind a flip up license plate. Running dual exhaust would then be really simple.

Re: Pictures of stock 47/48 side gas filler neck?

Thanks for the additional info 52!

Here's my 1995 s10 filler neck:

and the presumed "check valve". This is the end of the filler that attaches to the hose going to the tank:

That's good info on the tank. For my application, the stock s10 tank is perfect, I don't want dual exhaust and I do want to keep the spare tire under the back like the stock s10 had.

Re: Pictures of stock 47/48 side gas filler neck?

Buildinga55,

Can you measure how large the gas filler is on your truck where it passes through the grommet? On my 49 cab filler neck, it's 2.125" diameter, with a 3" hole for the grommet. I see your grommet hole is 2.5" diameter, so I'm wondering how big the fill tube is. Thanks!

I will try to get you a measurement tomorrow. I have been really busy and not in the shop for a couple days.

Re: Pictures of stock 47/48 side gas filler neck?

The 47/48 that I have was on the passenger side but it was a flatbed so I'm little help. I've still got the tank but will never use it.

On my son's S10 swap, we used a Blazer tank in the back and are routing the exhaust round the outside at that point. It'll end up dumping out like Bellflower tips but thats another story. We used the cross members from the Blazer and cut the shock pockets out. I had to heat up one area of the pickup shock mount pocket and modify it (read: hammer) so there was tank clearance but so far so good. He's doing some body mods to the rear quarters but the fill will come out the side behind the fender.

Measured the filler tube, it looks to be about 2 1/4"
