205 Parts Source?3spd vs 4spd Q

I need the sleeved coupling that slides into the adapter for a 4spd NP205 in a`72.It doesn`t have to be new.Any suggestions?

I have a NP205 from a`71 3spd truck.I`m assuming that coupling would be different.Does anyone know for sure before I tear it apart?Does someone have a reference on all the NP205 spec to compare?

Any help`s much appreciated.

ORD should have it. I think they make them there. Steve would also know if there are any differences. Everyone that I've ever pulled apart has been iffy though...

Re: 205 Parts Source?3spd vs 4spd Q

That`s another consideration. It`s prolly the most wearable part in the unit.Prolly should buy new for that part.I know there`s a difference in shaft length somewhere between 3spd & 4spd.I think it`s the t-case input is shorter? and all the difference is in the adapter.
I`d tear into both units but the 3spd one is still in the truck.I`m not ready to get into taking it down.I just want the 4spd unit ready before the swap.I`ll know for sure by the time I`m done.Best education out there, right?

Good luck figuring it out. I know the Rockwell's coupler for the 3 speed is longer than the one for the 4 speed, but I doubt that helps you any.

The sleeve for the 3 speed is longer than the four speed one.In theory you could turn it down on a laythe, but the 4 speed sleeve has a snap ring in the middle of it and you would need to make sure the 3 spd sleeve measures the same inside.

Erl,pm sent.
1t,thanks for that helpful info. That makes sense. The motor and transfer cases are mounted in the same position with all combinations. So,the difference is in the adaptor. The shaft would need to be longer.I was confused which end made it up.

Re: 205 Parts Source?3spd vs 4spd Q

Here are some pics for reference.
3spd/205 adapter

465 4-speed foreground/3 spd back ground

3 speed on left,4 speed on right(trans side on both)

case side on both.(yeah one is missin an ear).

Drive sleeves,3spd on left,4 speed on right.

I have thought about posting a thread on GM adapter's but wasnt sure if there was any interest.

Re: 205 Parts Source?3spd vs 4spd Q

now that really interesting... from your pics, my 71 k20 had a 3 speed sleeve in between the SM465 and NP205... it was defintly a 4 speed truck per the options list, but it had the longer adapter. the new one i ordered is the shorter one

Some of the earlier sleeves were longer and had a notch cut in em I assume to hold them in place against the beaing.

Re: 205 Parts Source?3spd vs 4spd Q

This is very helpful info to share. You can`t do better than seeing the actual pieces side by side. Most aren`t so lucky. You saved be from doing the same with mine.If you do a comparison thread I`ll see to it that it finds it way into the FAQ section.
Thanks so far.
