What is a 351 V6?
I was told the other day to think of a 454 with 2 cylinders cut off. Is this correct and is it a good engine for both power and fuel effiency?

Way back when I wuz a ungun' about 27 years ago, I had a 1959 GMC with a 351 V6 in it. I got it from a guy who used it as a tractor. He pulled stumps with it. I drove it for about 2 years, never put new oil in it, always used oil that had come out of my Dad's car. After about a year it spun a rod bearing. I drove it 46 miles one way to work every day (every day that I could get up and make it) or the work week. It NEVER died on me. I could tell stories after stories about that old truck. As for gas milage, at that time who cared. but it has to be the most reliable, torquest(is that a word) engine that I've ever had. I finally got a better mode of transportation and let it sit at my Dad's house after about 6 months he had it towed.

i am not sure of the bore/stroke but i have read that they are torque monsters. gas milage sucks though. and max rpm is around 3500. probably not good on the highway

I was looking at this the other day, I included a link to the thread I had. I believe the bore/stroke is on the line of 4.56/3.58 or somewhere about those numbers. After personally driving one, I can say that it is amazingly torquie (sp) engine, my test drive on an engine that desprately needed a tune up consistantly spun the wheels in 2nd (sm465....so first is basicaly 5mph and under), but it wouldn't spin those wheels until it hit 2,500 rpm....(assuming its the max torque point). Anyhoo, I am looking at a truck right now with the same setup, and the advice I have been given, is its a truck engine, not really a highly streetable engine. Right now I am debating whether or not I should buy it and drop 3.08's in the rear just to be able to use it as a driver.....don't have as many occasions to pull stumps at the moment as I would like!
in case you were wondering, the power rating for the engine is 180-220hp (depends on the variant 351s or e if memory serves) and 320ft-lbs. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php3?t=156049 |

Peak Torque on most of the V6's is between 1400 - 1600 RPM depending on the size and year.

The engine is a torque-monster. It is not good for sustained speed above 2,500 rpm. The block is a high nickel content, and will last a long time at low speeds. Acceleration is poor. The 351 was used mainly in 2 ton trucks. The 305 was in pickups. Jolly's webpage has a lot of info on these engines.
