700r4 pump question

I am in the process of attempting to rebuild the 700r4 in my '69 c10. When I pulled the old front pump seal out, I found that the pump body has 4 small cracks around where the input shaft goes through. They do not go all the way through, but I thought I would replace the pump body anyway to avoid any trouble, but I cannot find one anywhere with the same casting number as mine. The # is 8682132. I'm pretty sure this 700r4 is out of a 1992 corvette. I guess my question is if anyone knows where I can get just the body, not the whole pump? Or would it be possible to replace the complete pump with one from a 1991 truck 700r4 I have for parts? I will get pics up soon. Thanks for any help.

Re: 700r4 pump question

Just a thought because you said attempting to rebuild,I'd have the trans redone by a pro. Those trans can be very tricky and I've seen where they have failed after rebuild because something wasn't perfectly done. If you're experienced in rebuilding these than I'm sure if you brought the pump to a trans shop they could tell you what a replacement part number is and perhaps even have one.

Re: 700r4 pump question

It's the first transmission I've done personally, but I do have a certified gm mechanic helping me out. I also work at a chevy dealership and have checked and they can't get just the pump body, although they can get the whole pump, but they're expensive and I'm on a tight budget.

That pump is no bueno.

Any 4L60 pump from 88-92 should be fine

Re: 700r4 pump question

Definitely replace the pump. Mine went out on my 700r4. The shop that replaced the pump said the trans looked in great condition, recently rebuilt with little to no wear on any of the clutch bands. I say that, to say, I put my foot to the floor while toad testing my truck and lost the pump. It doesn't take much to finish off a pump.

Ask a trans shop about which pump they recommend. There are 10 and 13 vane pumps (7 too but it's an old crappy style) and the 13 vane isn't always better. The trade off is volume vs pressure depending on your application.

Re: 700r4 pump question

This pump is a 10 vane, so I guess I'll buy a complete pump and replace the whole thing.

Talking Re: 700r4 pump question

Most good transmission shops have the ability to surface pump casing halves, and usually have cores available. You can buy the heavy duty pumps with 13 vanes too....beast sun shell, better sprags,etc....not to mention, you need several bushing drivers and seal installation tools, unless your GM tech friend has them of course....good luck!
