73-87 DIN Head Unit Stereo Install

Like anything else you can do it sloppy or do it right. If you want a clean look and solid install you need to take your time, avoiding the urge to take an axe to the dash and use the Metra kit, p/n 87-99-3052: http://www.metraonline.com/part/87-99-3052

Tools: Screwdrivers, cutting tool (cut-off wheel or small reciprocating saw), file, razor blade.

1) Remove gauge bezel
2) Remove radio, prep wiring, etc.
3) Install metal plate from kit on dash.
4) Scribe the opening and remove the plate, then cut or use the plate as a guide and then cut. I find it easier to leave the plate in place, and cut the horizontals with a body saw (small reciprocating tool). Then remove the plate and cut the verticals with a cut-off wheel. Tape the removed pieces together and place in the glove box or the ash tray in case you have regrets...
5) Install the plate on the dash, check the fit of the DIN sleeve, file or clearance as needed.
6) Remove the plate, fasten it to the backside of the gauge bezel as a cutting guide. Using the aligned screw holes, I thread a couple of small bolts through to hold it in place while cutting. The body saw makes quick work of the plastic.
7) Install the plate.
8) Install the bezel.
9) Place the DIN sleeve into the plastic cover plate.
10) Install that assembly into the DIN opening, bend securing tabs as needed.
11) Re-use the factory metal strap support to support the radio, or a piece of strapping if you don't have it. The stock piece will work if you flatten it and bend closer to the dash hole, which makes it longer. Most aftermarket stereos have some supplied screws for the frame, use one of these in the side of the unit to attach the support.
12) Plug in the wiring and rock out while finishing your beer!
