I cant drive up hills?

This is such a bummer. So I have a 350 and a rusty gas tank in my 70 C-10. When i give it lots of gas, it bogs down some times. Then when I back off to where I am just barely touching the accelerator it stops decelerating, but it won't pick up speed. Then i noticed it only did this when the truck is pointing up hill. It doesn't even have to be a steep hill, Just a gentle slope will do it. Anyway, I was sure it was the fuel filter so i changed it.... didn't work. Now I don't know anything about carbs but I think there is something going on in there. Do you guys agree? This is only one of many issues I am having but those are for another post. Thanks yall

Re: I cant drive up hills?

well if you know you have a rusty tank the first thing i'd do would b to pull the tank and clean it out as well as change the strainer on the fuel pick up// while the tank is out i'd also blow out the fuel lines of replace them// would definately replace all the rubber connecting lines and if theres a long lenth of lazyman rubber line would replace with the proper hard line

Re: I cant drive up hills?

There is usually another filter. It is behind the nut where the fuel line goes into the carb. Many of these are made of sintered bronze and when clogged are likely to cause the problem. There is also a filter on the pickup tube in the tank.It can also clog.Replacing the tank isn't a big deal and will help with this problem. If you can;t afford to change tanks now then get a couple of fuel filters(inline style metal ones) and change them regularly.
Another fix would be to pull and clean the tank then reline it with one of the kits on the market.IIRC this is a decent fix but only a few dollars cheaper then a new tank.Since you are a subscriber you might find one or post a WTB in the classifieds section.Lots of tanks around from people switching to a rear tank.

Re: I cant drive up hills?

You need to get a new gas tank. If there is rust in there, you will want a new one.
That being said, what kind of carb? Quads have a fuel filter right inside the carb where the fuel line screws in. Did you change that filter too?
Rust running through the carb certainly won't do any good, but I wouldn't rebuild the carb until you get a new gas tank.

Re: I cant drive up hills?

carb might need rebuilt as well... or just really cleaned. You can get a replacement gas tank pretty cheap ($150)

Re: I cant drive up hills?

You can keep putting money into filters, and time into cleaning, but it isn't going to solve your problem. There are plenty of people who pull their in cab tanks to run under bed tanks, you should be able to find a used tank close to you for pretty cheap.
