Partially painted '60/'70 grille, who else has done it?
I'm slowly falling for this look. Wondering who else has a grille like this on here. I saw it on a SEMA truck that was for sale. And, thats about it. |

I like the blacked out part but I wish they didn't paint the grille surround.

Re: Partially painted '60/'70 grille, who else has done it?
oddly enough the only pic I can find with my painted grill is a B&W photo! DOH!
But the truck was midnight blue when I got it with different colored bumpers, farm mirrors, and white hood. IT needed to be painted and when I painted it I did the grill too. I know it's a GMC, not a Chevy, but you can see where I painted everything the same color and where it's shiny!

I think it looks good.I think the shiny part needs to be as clean and bright as possible,or the painted portion would not look as good.

Something like that... I painted the bezels and a strip around the lights.
I'm debating on blacking out the inside of the grill now. Just can't make my mind up. |

Re: Partially painted '60/'70 grille, who else has done it?
I take it that everyone here knows that std auto paint,(really any regular paint), isn't going to stick on an aluminum grill. It requires an AL or etiching primer first.
I painted the lower strip on my new 70 Chevy grill when I de-chromed my front bumper, painted the light bezels, and retouched the original black around the outside of the bezels on the grill... then I did it all again after it started to peal because I didn't use an AL primer first. Even though I used a Urathane/Auto paint instead of the two-stage. The inner grill parts,(plastic), stuck just fine along with the light bezels,(also not AL). So I didn't have to redo everything. Frankly, I like "Color" over the "All-Chrome" look and if it's a 'driver',(like mine), I think it's easier to keep up if you use the spray-on "Ding-guard" coating on the front-end parts. IMHO, IHTH Michael |

Re: Partially painted '60/'70 grille, who else has done it?
I'm thinking about it on my truck. When we goto respray some body panels after patching. My grille is so scuffed up and such, and a few scrapes in the anodized finish when we were doing dent repair on it.
Thanks for the tip on the AL primer, never had thought about it. |

Re: Partially painted '60/'70 grille, who else has done it?
The truck in the first post also benefits greatly from the sectioned hood. That gives it a sleeker look than it would have if the original hood was on it with the painted outer grille.

Re: Partially painted '60/'70 grille, who else has done it?
Not without scratching with 60gr or heavier, and there's still no guarantees. if you're going to do something like that, I'd recommend using the fiberglass-filler instead,(still no guarantees, though). Stuff just don't like to stick to AL very well. I think it's because it moves too much with temp changes. (...and AL actually hates water).
If you're going to fill the grill or any cosmetic AL part like that, it's simply recommended to replace the part with new if you wish it to look right. IMHO, IHTH Michael Last edited by C. M. Wolf; 01-22-2008 at 08:45 AM. |

Re: Partially painted '60/'70 grille, who else has done it?
i saw a red truck for sale on here a few weeks ago that had the frt grill painted to match and it looked awesome.the only difference is that he painted the middle part where it says chevrolet also.the only thing left chrome was the thin line that flows around the headlight bezels(parallel to the center section that says chevrolet) and the bezels themselves.tried to find the picture for you to post it, but cant.i love the painted look of the 67-68 trucks but cant afford the the entire frt clip to change it.i have to replace the grill anyway,so i'll just buy the cheaper grill without the lettering and paint it to match the truck.im 100% sold on the look.

Re: Partially painted '60/'70 grille, who else has done it?
PLEASE DONT USE 60GRIT on an aluminum grille..........if you are going to paint or do like the owner of the black 69 did and remove and fill the turn signals. or if you are simply going to paint it. use this stuff i have used it before and it works well like the tech info for it says "as close to lead as you can get".
