power steering pulley removal

So I'm trying to refinish my pump but I can't get the pulley off. Mine has 3/8 Allen, what I've read in other post is that it has nothing to do with removing the pulley. Most people have used a pulley remover. How does that work with my pump? There is nothing for the putter to thread into

Re: power steering pulley removal

If you look on the boss where the allen bolt threads into, you will see a groove all the way around. The puller locks into this groove. Most pullers have a piece that looks like a socket that's split down the middle. This "socket" has a tang on the end that slips into the groove. You then thread a long rod into the center and it bottoms out on the area where the allen goes. The harder you tighten the rod, the more it pulls the pulley off of the pump.

Any major auto parts store (AutoZone, NAPA, O'Reilley's) will loan you the tool for free. You just have to leave them a credit card for collateral.

Yep, rent the puller, it's super easy, takes about 5 minutes start to finish. Just be sure to take a measurement or two prior to removing so that you get the new one installed to the same depth for belt alignment.

Here is a pic of tool. It may help visualize prior instructions/replies to your question.

I bought this one at Harbor Freight for $20. It works great and is available whenever I need it:

Re: power steering pulley removal

The early models had a nut on the front of the shaft. You remove this nut & then use a puller on the pulley hub. An impact wrench is the best way to take off the nut but you can put an allen wrench in the hole to hold the shaft.
