Mechanical Gauges
Good evening all.
I figured somebody has wired up a Autometer mechanical gauge combo up already. I'm trying to because I don't trust my gauge cluster on my 97 3500 7.4. I'm wondering if there's a problem with disconnecting at the sensor's and blocking off the wiring ends? I have heard (don't know if its true) that if the computer doesn't sense any oil pressure it will not allow the truck to start? I also heard that its the same with the water temp? Like I said I don't know. I started pulling the plug on the R/S between #4 and #6 and of course the square plug snapped. I'm a wishing I would of went electrical instead. Agrrrrr |

Re: Mechanical Gauges
I honestly don't know if you have to keep the electrical gauges for the computer that exists in these trucks. you could always keep both by using a brass T fitting for the oil pressure. I would imagine the water temp could also, but it would be a bigger T style. I believe the fitting that snapped on you was your water temp. There probably is a similar spot on the other head where you could remove the plug and put in your mechanical temp prob.

Re: Mechanical Gauges
Be pretty easy to tap into oil n water passages without bypassing the ECM. And I’m pretty sure you need those for it to run properly.
