Unusual tach or aftermarket?
Is this tach and vacuum gauage aftermarket? I think so because the grid lines interfere. Looks at home though.

Re: Unusual tach or aftermarket?
Not sure about the Tach, but the vacuum gauge looks to be an old Stewart Warner one a "Motor Minder". Interesting to say the least, but not stock.

Re: Unusual tach or aftermarket?
Neither are stock, but they both are period correct and look good in there. I would pull the tach back out, cut the clear plastic out from over it, and put a clear piece of lexan in it's place and run it like that.

Re: Unusual tach or aftermarket?
As far as the tach goes, I know it isn't stock 67-72 equipment, but it is close to factory Chevrolet. The font might be a little different, hard to say from the pic, but it looks a lot like a 66 and earlier tach.

Re: Unusual tach or aftermarket?
I agree with LHM.
That style tach usually demands a fair amount of coin when sold by itself though. My guess, is that it could be an old Stewart Warner.

Re: Unusual tach or aftermarket?
I thought maybe it might have been dealer installed but on second thought, it'd be much easier for them just to install a stock tach so probably not?

Re: Unusual tach or aftermarket?
stock style tachs were avalible as dealer add ons, they would just swap out all the needed parts and then you'd have an over priced tach that thought about being somewhat acurate and not even able to reach red line of the engines installed.

Re: Unusual tach or aftermarket?
So you're saying the ones in my photo are definitely not dealer installed? I would guess owner installed.

Re: Unusual tach or aftermarket?
I'll 2nd the SW tach. If you want to get rid of thoses lines over the tach, cut out that area and replace it with a piece of glass or plastic from a hardware store. I've kinda been thinking about putting one of those motor minder vacuum gauges in. How do you like it?

Re: Unusual tach or aftermarket?
those are aftermarket, no dealer would have spent the time invovled to install those pieces.
Instead of cutting the plastic out, just take the panel apart, remove the lens, and use a small high speed buffer (with polish) to remove the lines. I've done it by hand before... nit fun, and it took a few hrs of labor (and one sore finger) but it all came off. |
