1971 GMC Questions

I just purchased a 1971 GMC Shortbed that has a few weird options. I'm not sure if its original or maybe been pieced together a long the way. But it has a 292, 3 speed on column, power steering, manual brakes, wood bedfloor, and what seems to be a highlander seat? I posted a few pics, I know it's hard to read the spid. I will try to repost a new pic or just write what it says.

Also forgot to mention it has coil spring rear, from what I've had before most GMC's had leaf springs. Any help would be appreciated! Model CS15743 1D89AB Paint Stripe 1G60AN Aux Spring 1Z62BK Cust Comf & Conv EQ 1607AM Blue Cloth Trim 1521AA White

Re: 1971 GMC Questions

Well the plaid seat I thought to be a 72 only thing and the coil spring rear was a option but that truck is not what you would call a optioned truck, although the wood floor is one as well. With the exception of the seat someone could have just ordered the truck the way they wanted it back in the day. Customers used to be able to to that. Jim

Re: 1971 GMC Questions

I didn't know the plaid was a 72 only thing. And I wasn't sure about the coil/leaf deal either. Just didn't know why nothing was on the spid about the woodfloor or rearend option. Thanks for the help!

Pretty straight forward actually from the information given.
An uplevel interior in blue cloth that would have matched the door panels was in it originally. That Highlander plaid seat was added and they were a 72 only (well actually they were offered in 73 as well..).
The 292 and power steering are clearly options and very period.
It looks like the wood bed is listed on your difficult to read SPID it would be E81 Floor Board.
The D89 pinstripe is listed on a lot of trucks but they have faded away with the years and repaints. If you want more just do a site search for "D89". The G60 Aux Spring was in this case a quarter eliptical helper spring bearing against the trailing arm, again not an unusual option. The coils are not listed because they are standard. Leafs are listed as option on trucks so equipped. If you read through ads for the trucks you will see time and time again GMC touting coils with optional leaf springs. True you see more with leafs but I have yet to see a GMC with coils listed on the SPID.

Re: 1971 GMC Questions

That thing is pretty sweet, I've heard the gmc trucks with 6 cylinders were coil springs, I believe only half tons were, hot rod the 292 and put a nice floor shift and call it a day

Re: 1971 GMC Questions

Yeah, I liked the looks of the truck when I saw it. It's smokes pretty bad so I'm going to pull the motor and go thru it and thinking about trying out the T5 trans swap. Other than that just plan to lower it and drive it lol
