New 72 K10 CheySuper swb shock question
Hello All,
I am new to the board after just having purchased my latest in the 67-72 series. I just bought a 72 K10 Cheyenne Super swb and I have a few questions about it. Details: 350 with 4 spd manual. Missing a couple of options unfortunately. Namely the tach and tilt but I will live. It is in good, unrestored condition. Unfortunately the prior owner pulled the original 350 and put in a 350 from an 89 pickup. To make matters worse, I bent an exhaust valve on the trip from Utah to CA and now only 7 cyclinders are working. But, I am still thrilled with the purchase. Here is question 1. It looks like it has the original rear shocks on it but I'm not sure. They are regular shocks but they have a coil around them. Is this something I should try to retain or should I just dump them and get some good shocks. It will never be 100% original but is there any benefit to these? Question 2. According to the glove box sticker, the truck was medium red #514. In a reference book I have it is also called crimson red. Is there a good place in the Pomona CA area to get a sample of this paint? The exterior appears more orange than red at this point but all indications are that it has not been painted. Love the truck, in spite of it running like crap right now. Debating on another engine transplant or having the valve fixed. We'll see. Previously owned: 71 Sub 4X4 3/4 9 seater medium green and white; 71 sub 4X4 3/4 6 seater bronze and white; 70 truck 3/4 4X4; 72 truck 1/2 cheyenne. Missing my green 71 sub in a big way. Was our family car for 7 years and sold to someone in Huntington Beach a few years back. |

Great find, lets see some more pics! Option sticker too! Do your shocks actually have a coil around them, or just a regular looking shock with a "spirial" molded into them?

Re: New 72 K10 CheySuper swb shock question
Joe beat me to it.
If it is a normal shock with a sprial in the metal, then they are either original, or way old GM replacements. |

Re: New 72 K10 CheySuper swb shock question
Thanks for all the welcomes and the info. The shocks look like a somewhat regular shock with a coil around them. There are rubber guides on the outside of the shock and then the coil is around those. I am guessing it is aftermarket because it also has overload springs on it. I think the original owner had a camper on it.
I will get better pictures soon. The one photo is the night I brought it home and it was a little dark. It had tons of oxidation that I buffed out and it now looks somewhat respectable. I am a little confused on the color. After buffing it out, it looks pretty orangish red on the outside. The inside is the 514 red. However, the exterior does not appear to have ever been painted and there are definitely no multiple layers of paint. Would the red have faded to an orange? It faded pretty evenly if it did. Under the Chevrolet plate on the bumper it is still red as well. Highly suspect but the only other option is they did a grind down to the metal and repainted a long time ago. Why go to all that work and paint it orange and leave the inside red. No way to know for sure since the original owner is dead. It also had a blazer spare tire carrier mounted to the tailgate. Gotta love that. It is now off and some big holes left behind. Overall, amazing shape for the year. Still has the original seat cover with a six inch tear on the driver side. Passenger side is perfect. No holes cut inside anywhere. Stock radio still intact and working. Headliner in great shape. Ordered the one missing hubcap off ebay a few days ago so I will have all 4. Dealer installed a/c unfortunately instead of factory. |

welcome from Texas, look on gmpartsdirect.com and I just saw where they have a gm 350 on sale right now from regular 2154.00 to 1269.00 I believe with a 50.00 core and ship to any local fedex hub with gm warranty and brand new engine not rebuilt and with gm warranty. Hard to beat I would think.

Sounds like you have a great start there! That medium red is a booger. Nobody seems to have a paint code for it and in certain light it doesn't look red at all, just orange! I have so many people calling my truck orange I'm thinking about painting it green.

Re: New 72 K10 CheySuper swb shock question
Sweet find! I am very jealous. I would imagine the red faded to orange. Look on the firewall to see if the stencil marks are still there. if they are still there they paint there atleast is original and should be somewhat less faded/oxidized, but will give you a good idea as to if the paint is original.

My truck is the same 514 paint color. This is the original paint, and it does fade to an orange color.

nice truck. Gm really never had a true red. from factory it would've looked like that except brighter.

Re: New 72 K10 CheySuper swb shock question
Here are some additional photos. I also pulled the rear shocks and will be putting new ones on the rear. Anyone have a preference on shocks? Rancho's ok? Strange color as I said before. Sometimes it looks red and other times orange. Pictures make it look better than it is. Has a bit of rust on the door bottoms and under the top molding. Not bad for a Utah truck though. The bolts for the rear shocks came right off. There is not a ton of corrosion as I would have expected.
Sorry about the dates on the last photos. My camera reset the date and I didn't notice. |

Re: New 72 K10 CheySuper swb shock question
Those shocks were Monroe Load levelers. Real popular on these trucks Back in the late mid to late 70's which would have been the first go round of replacements. My 71 blazer had them on it. I put them on the 2 -72's as well. Gave a great ride on and off the road. No longer available. Otherwise I would have them

Monroe still makes them in the sensatrac version, black with coil spring around outside.
