I finally painted the bedcover and installed it tonight. I will need to come up with some weatherstrip and shocks. The reason I painted it black is because I will be painted the top section of the truck black this winter sometime. It may help me sell it easier in the spring. Later, FCG

did u make it? ive been thinkin of making my own also, how tough was it? did u just make a frame then a peice of aluminum over that? the more info the Better

Yes, must have more details. How much does it weigh? What type of hinge and how did you secure it? I'm definately building one also but was planning on doing it out of composite (kevlar/carbon fiber) material with a couple Autoloc actuators operated off the key fob.

The frame is 1" square aluminum tubing. The "skin" is .090 sheet aluminum. It is attache to the frame with 3M 1" wide VHB tape (Very High Bond). The tape works great. It is hard to see in the photo but, the cover has a seam in the middle running side to side. I couldn't justify the price of one sheet of 6' x 8' aluminum. It would never get to me undamaged. The hinges are homemade and operate like a trunk hinge. That is the reason for the small section mounted to the front of the bed. I will take some more pics later today of the hinge area.

It will be reasonable. Probably in the 12,500-13,500 range. It may sell and it may not. Crews is delivering a 2WD drive Blazer frame to me next weekend. I will be converting the 4WD. I am more interested in a 2WD Blazer, than my truck. If I can get me a carport built this winter, I will probably keep both.

Will that tape hold up to the weather stress of a daily driver? Also what about using sheet metal as compared to aluminum? (thinking cost here) It looks awsome, Good job!!

Looking forward to those pictures FuelCellGuy, TIA. About how much do you think it weighs? And do you have any links or info on the VHB tape? What were your reasons for using this as opposed to welding (since you have those capabilities)?

I had another cover before this one on my truck for about a year and a half and drove it 180 miles a day, five days a week. The key is preparation. Both surfaces must be ground with 80 polishing disc. Then, Clean with lacquer thinner, put your tape on one side, peel back the corners, lay your aluminum on the frame and line it up. Then pull the tape backing off from between the frame and aluminum and apply pressure as you work your way down. I think the corrosion factor of sheetmetal would make it a poor choice.

68LSS1,
The cover weighs about 75 lbs. I used the VHB to prevent warping from welding. It is a lot easier to clean up as well. I get it from one of my suppliers.

how would that be a poor choice once it is primed, painted, etc it would be just like the rest of the truck

I guess that would work but then the holding strength of the tape woujld only be as good as the paint adhesion. It might work.. Later, FCG

They also say the 4932/4952 works on powder paints and there are others that work on painted surfaces. Any experience with these?

so how did you work around the area of the rear stake pockets? this is the reason I cant find an aftermarket tonnau (sp).

The 4910 is the only tape that I have had any experience with.

I made the frame to fit in between the rear stake pocket area. The top material sticks out to catch the top of the bed rail.

That cover looks great. I think ive seen your truck before. Im at Meacham field alot and i thought i saw a truck very similar to yours in Ft. Worth a few weeks back. I think it was parked at a metal working place but i was too busy staring at the truck to really notice. Was that you?

Peaches are orange and red ..... it looks pink to me, maybe not cadillac pink but too close to call anything else unless you have a paint chart or box of crayons handy.
