windshield gasket questions
I need to buy a windshield gasket (no trim). Who has the BEST product. I don't want to mess with a poor fit or leaks. I really appreciate all of the information I can get from any of you who have replaced one recently.
Thanks, LT |

I had my done at a glass shop. I gave them a aftermarket gasket to go with the new winshield and they could not get a good fit so I ended up getting one from a gm dealership for about $ 100 more than the aftermarket gasket.the original is more money but the end result was worth it.

I had bad luck with an aftermarket gasket too, and plan to get a GM one. MOTHERTRUCKERS has them for around $100 I think.

My GM gasket came from the Chevy dealer in a GM box with a GM sticker with part number.
Don't know who made it for sure, I guess, but it did work. |

Man, how can a chunk of rubber cost $100?! When i think about all the 100s here, and 200s there, my truck is gonna be in pieces for a very long time.

Look at that pic! How much does whoever made that gasket have in supplies? $10? $15? I should go in to the gasket making business. Okay, I'm done whining.

HOLY COW! are none of the aftermarket ones any good? I really didn't imagine that I'd have to drop $100 for a gasket. luckydog, I'm with you my restoration is gonna take a LONG time. Maybe Wes or Paul or Tim can chime in on the aftermarket gaskets?

Aftermarket gaskets work fine in my experience.
It just that my last truck, a 69 SWB, I used only NOS parts to do the duty, so I went with GM. I've put in a couple of windshields and many back windows with aftermarket seals with no complaints.

We just used an aftermarket windshield gasket last week and it was a pain to use. The inside upper right corner has a few puckers in it I'm hoping will settle down. I called the local Chevy dealer and was told it now only comes in the deluxe rubber with the groove in it for chrome and was over $100. A professional glass company installed the plain aftermarket one. We probably should have reused the original rubber because it's it's still in pretty good shape.

The aftermarket back window gaskets work great, but after installing my windshield with a new aftermarket gasket for chrome trim, I had a 1/8" gap on the outside bottom edge where the gasket meets the glass, and a 1/4 to 3/8" gap on the inside top edge where the gasket meets the roof. I tried everything to make it fit with no luck. Of coarse you could fill it with sealer, but I didn't want to do that. The aftermarket gaskets without the trim may fit better, I haven't tried them.

I have had 3 windsheilds installed in my shop with our gaskets. 2 were standards without moldings and one was a 71-72 with trim. All 3 gaskets worked well for us without puckers or leaks. The glass shop that installed my windsheilds uses a sealer along with the gaskets. When I inquired as to why he did that, because these gaskets do not require sealer... His responce was that he gaurantees the window not to leak ever, and sealer was his inshurance policy. My thinking on it also was that if it seals up the little channels up in the corners of the windsheild opening, that it was a good thing!! WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

I just wanted to add that I do not have any personal experience on the 67-70 deluxe gaskets. I have sold a few though and haven't had any bad reports back on them. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

I should also add that my gasket came from LMC, so that may have been the problem, lol!
