Can anyone steer me to products or vendors who sell or have knowledge of building/rebuilding chev 6 cylinder engines? I'm on the verge of buying a 1967 292 from a guy near where I live for $25 (cheap eh?) with the idea of building it for a bit more horse power as well as fuel economy and reliability. Does anyone have info or experience building a 292 and what were your results.
The engine will eventually go in a 67 chev shortbed not the 71 3/4ton 4x4 that I use as a daily driver.

For the $$$ you'd have in the L6, you could put that into a 350 and have alot more power. Although it's possible to get good mpg's and decent power with the L6, your mileage with a properly tuned and built 350 won't be much less anyway.

Fenton also makes a cool cast header. There are tons of manifold options. Right now I am building my own intake and exhaust for my 250. I like the ribbed valve cover Clifford has.

Unless you have a special reason to go with a 6 cylinder, I would select a v8 if I was going to swap an engine.

I have a 250 on my 68 and even though it has enough torque and plenty of power for my purposes, the gas mileage is not all that great -15 to 16mpg combined.

I have a 69 (not running right now) that had a 350/350 and the gas mileage was the same. The engine was pretty well worn, but I could still muster at least 16 on the highway with it. I reckon with a good overhaul or new engine, I might squeeze 17 mpg on the highway with the 350 with a lot more power.

I will say that the 6 cylinders are a lot easier to work on...

I say go with the Inline 6, everyone puts a V8 in their vehicles. There's one company that builds Inline 6's and they have a 292 racing motor that gets 400-500 hp. I'll have to see if I can remember who it is and post a link later.

A 250 will get good gas mileage, but a 292 built for power will be the same as a 350. I prefer inline 6's just for simplicity's sake and for the cool factor since a nicely painted inline 6 looks pretty unique, so the choice it just your style, sounds liek you already want to go inline which is cool. I don't know of any vendors experienced in building inline sixes specifically, but for upgrades, get you an offenhauser 4bbl intake, Holley 390 carb, headers, and an RV or marine cam, HEI dizzy and you will be doing just fine.

Damn. I really like the cover on the 292. I think I need a chrome cover like that for my 250.

I had good luck with a '67 block. Ran it for 25 years and 250,000 miles until I wasn't getting anything out of cylinders 3 & 4, so I sidelined it and rebuilt my original '68 292 block. It's bored .030-over [= 296 CI], with Badger pistons, Crane cam [260H], stock rods, stock crank, 307 intake valves, Offy intake, Clifford headers, Edelbrock 500 CFM carb, Centerforce II clutch, SM465, 3.73 Corp 12-Bolt w/Eaton posi. Truck is '68 C/10 Stepside.
I intend to rebuild my '67 block @ .040- [298] or. 060-over [301] and put it in a '72 K/5, someday.

One thing these V8 guys won't tell you, is how often they change engines. A well-built L6 will last at least twice as long, if treated right. I change oil at 2000 miles.

in the side of the head
