instrument lights-HELP!

in my 1964 Chevy pickup ....

When I bought it the oil pressure gauge, ammeter, fuel gauge and water temp gauge all were not working. The speedometer was broken too. But the turn signals and instrument cluster lights worked, as did the dome light switch and headlights and brake lights.

I got another gauge cluster, refinished it, and installed it. Now all the guages work. Fuel, oil, ammeter, and water temp. Lubed and reset the speedometer to 00000.0 and it works perfect. Brake, turn signals all work.

But the instrument cluster lights dont work at night. All the bulbs are new. I have power (12V) at the fuse box "instrument" fuse on both ends when the light switch is pulled out. I ground the back of the dash to the steering column with an additional jumper cable but it doesnt work still. Any ideas?

Try splicing a fused 12-volt wire straight to a wire going to ONE of the bulbs. Voltage to ONE should provide voltage to all. If they burn now, trace for poor connection from fusebox to the bulbs. If not, run your ground jumper to a 'better' point. **You may want to temporarily use jumper cables & run your ground straight to battery ground just for a test!** Voltage plus ground = burning bulbs!

Re: instrument lights-HELP!

Check the headlight switch. All the lights run through it. Is the dimmer set?
