Hey Guys,

I'm looking for any tips/suggestions on how to keep the oil pan gasket in place when replacing with the engine still in place. I've got a feeling that whole gravity thing is going to make things difficult.

Buy a (1) piece gasket. Instead of rtv, they sell some brush on stuff at the parts store that is a gasket adhesive, really cheap and works well.

I prefer the one piece gaskets myself. I know they cost more but they are a whole lot less frustrating.

I don't know of a magic way to install a standard set. Just make sure you do not over tighten as this can cause the front and rear gaskets to move and create a bad seal. Torque to 10#.

This is the way I do it and have been doing it for the last few times I've taken the oil pan out...

I take the pan off and clean the gasket surface real good with a flat blade scraper that I picked up (and of course clean the engine side also).

I make sure the pan surface is flat.

Then I put a bead of gasket adhesive or sealant to the oil pan only..

Buy a good quality gasket and lay it on the pan and use the bolts to insure it's in place and let it set/dry until it doesn't move. Sometimes an hour or more depending on the time that I have.

I've had good luck doing it this way and when I do remove the oil pan again, the gasket stays on the pan...

One thing to do as well is tighten the front two and rear bolts hand tight first. I was told that by my mechanic buddy and it really helped the 4 pc. stay in one spot while bolting it down. He uses the yellow "monkey snot" stuff, it works real well too. You know you will have to raise the motor up with a engine hoist for the pan to clear the front main too.

The last Fel Pro 1 piece gasket I bought came with 4 plastic clips to hold the gasket in place. I did not use them though, I had the motor out.

Valve covers and pans , I have been using thread for years to tie them on and just snip off the access when done.

I have used string or zip ties to hold gaskets in place while installing back on engine. Just run a few in the bolt holes evenly around the pan (not every hole), after getting pan back in place, attach to engine by placing a few bolts in the holes without string or zip ties. Tip - do not tighten string or zip ties leaving loose just enough to be able to cut out with what ever means available. Afterward finish installing remaining bolts, tighten to specific torque. Don't forget to fill with oil afterward. hahaha!!!

I too have the FelPro one piece. It's a little spendy but well worth the money and easy to install.

use 3M weather strip adhesive on pan side of gasket, after glueing gasket on pan turn pan over and let set for about an hour. it will stay in place for the rest of your life....... they dont call it gorilla snot for nothing.

I use this, Fel Pro part number OS34510T. it comes with these 4 snap things that screw into the block. put your gasket in place, then snap the pan in place. install some bolts, then remove the snap things. easy japaneesy.

buy yourself four "studs " to replace the bolts on the front and rear corners. perferably one inch , that way you can set the pan up with nuts and have room to make sure all is straight then ease it up evenly

spray the gasket with COPPER-COAT SPRAY before installing on pan, then put your first bolt in as you lift... I've got one arm and it works for me.

I use the brush on gasket adhessive all the time. Great stuff and seals good to.

I ended up using RTV. I forget how sticky that stuff is... especially when its 103 degrees out!

The one piece gasket with the enclosed plastic studs is the way to go if the engine is in the vehicle. I'm sure the other methods using RTV work well. The one piece gasket is supposed to be re-useable too.

I think I'll go 1 piece next time. I already had a old style gasket set in the garage & couldn't bring myself to spend the $.
