Cool man...My room mate had one back in the 70's. We had a lot of fun tearing around in that thing. I think they look pretty gpood too. Don't see to many nowdays. Looks like a nice find. Congrats

I've always thought those were cool. Now how do you shoehorn a smallblock into it?................A buddy of my dad's put a 327 into a Healy Sprite years ago. It was a bad weapon. Have fun!

I've seen pics of a few of these tearing up the quarter mile with big blocks in them...running between 7's and 9's.

Don't worry, I've already looked through just about every possible engine swap - kinda sad given she just bought the car and it's not even mine, LOL...

Only thing is, a 90deg V6 like the GM 3.8 is a pretty tight fit.

A Mazda Rotary, on the other hand...weighs less, is smaller, lower center of gravity, comes with a 5-speed stick, and makes at least 150hp in stock trim. Not a lot on paper, but it's a 2000lb car with the 1900cc four-banger...

Then consider the kind of power a two-rotor Mazda can be built up to.

just remember anything fits with a torch and a welder. nothing is impossible with the right tools i bet a smallblock will fit in there

Smallblocks can and do fit, but they upset the balance of the car big-time...

It'd run mid-to-high 14's on a bone-stock 140hp Mazda rotary from a late '80s RX-7. Who knows, by the time we get around to swapping an engine, the VASTLY improved 270hp naturally aspirated RX-8 rotary might be easily available...

As far as the small block swap goes, as my dad's friend always says, "You can do anything if you are dumb or rich enough." In my opinion, a small block is too much work. Why not put a Ford 2.3 turbo 4cyl in. It is about the same size as the original engine and can be tuned like crazy. The turbo 2.3's generally came with factory forged pistons. They come in Thunderbird Turbo Coupes and SVO Mustangs. My buddy has an 88 Turbo Coupe producing around 350 hp at the wheels with an upgraded turbo, cold air intake setup and ported/polished intake, heads and exhaust manifold. He beats ricers left and right. They make him pop his hood and are amazed to find that their 4 bangers cant beat his and his car weighs more than 1000 pounds more than their car. If you find a good donor car, many come equipped with an 8.8 inch disk brake rearend with trac-loc, 3.55 or 3.73 gears. Just something to look into.

(Just a note, I have no problem with any car manufacturer so long as it is american

)

I like your idea about the mazda rotary. There figures are VERY decieving. BTW, they make (or did in 1980) a twin turbo for the wankel. Had one on my RX7 in Japan. It feels real weird being it a car that winds to 11,000 +.

Awesome, man...

The only real downsides to the RX7 swap are cost (though not really much different than any other swap) and the fact that a rotary isn't the most long-lived engine; most of the research I did when I was looking at buying an RX-7 indicated that the engines started to go after only 100,000mi unless they'd been really taken care of.

Which is part of the reason I'm anxious to see what the new RX-8's rotary will cost on the market...seeing as it makes 270hp naturally aspirated, with lower emissions, better fuel economy, and supposedly better longevity...
