67 Antennae

I'm looking at a truck that the guy has had for over 20 years. He says that the placement of the antennae on the truck is original for '67 chevy pickups. I don't recall ever seeing it on the fender. Can anyone tell me where the antennae was placed on a '67 from the factory? I always thought it was the same place as '68 - '72. If not factory, would this be a dealer installed or an idiot installed antennae? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: 67 Antennae

I don't believe that is a factory installed antennae. I have seen a few (on the internet) that had it placed there. From what I gathered, it was installed on the fender because the truck most likely had a camper on it that hung over the cab thus limiting the room required for an antennae.

Re: 67 Antennae

So, did they put it wherever they felt like it should go? Do you think the antenna on this truck is a factory one, just installed by the dealer?
Thanks,
Larry

Re: 67 Antennae

The dealers did move them on the fender for campers. The reason is simply the length of it when extended!

Re: 67 Antennae

A factory antennae mounted in that location on the fender would stick straight out the side about 31".

Factory antennae are a solid mast. There may have been a telescoping option (?) but the standard for FM reception is 31" and that's what antennae usually are. My Custom Camper had the solid mast in the factory location and sat just in front of the camper.

Re: 67 Antennae

Not sure about 67 but I pulled this telescoping unit off my 72 Custom Camper. It was mounted on the cowel and extends to 57"! I'm pretty sure its a factory piece, part # 3898673.

Re: 67 Antennae

All the 60's cheyy I've owned had telescopic antennae and since an FM ratio didn't become a common option until the 70 (Look at Camaro option sites on the net) the antennae were quite long for reception on the AM band.

Re: 67 Antennae

Well, most trucks had solid masts and GM made one antennae for all applications. Since AM uses whatever length works and FM's ideal length is 31",that's what they were. Telescoping antennae was an option or accessory. Comparing cars to trucks is apples to oranges in many cases. Disc brakes were an option on cars and available prior to '71,tilt steering was available prior to '69,dual exhaust was available with small blocks, and integral power steering was used for many years on cars prior to '68,for instance.
