Picked Up This '71 Chevy Today

-
I learned on the '66 that you don't post that you bought a truck until you have the title in your hand and the truck on the trailer...

That said, this is Grandpa's '71 Chevy truck. Not my Grandpa, PJ's Grandpa. Grandma gave PJ the truck so he proceeds to tear it apart so he can use the parts on his '69 Longhorn. He took the rear end out, he took the seat out, he took the gas tank out, then he took the engine and transmission out to put the TH400 in his truck. This is what is left... He still has the engine and I think I am going to end up with it.. (I hope) I told him it needs to stay with the truck. I have been dealing on it off and on for two years. It was out of the elements but the rats and mice have been in it. For Iowa it has pretty nice sheet metal. It needs rockers but that is about it. The floor is better than I had hoped for.

I went over to the salvage yard and scrounged a rear end and wheels I could use to get it home and the install actually went pretty smooth.

The first pictures were taken inside the building, The next ones were on the trailer. I will post more tomorrow after I get it cleaned up.

Your hydraulic pump looks a lot like the one I have for my 67!

Yes, but the grandson said it didn't work right for some reason.

Thanks Schrum, It will be a while before I do much to this one except clean it up. I have to finish the '70 4x4 first.

Chad, if you get back to this thread, does yours work OK?

Geeez, Leon! "Leon's home for wayward trucks" Good score! Are you intending to Flip the 4x4? Momma's gonna need a ladder to get in that one!

Ain't that the truth..... I'm thinking about going to look at a '68 one ton today.

Yes, the 4x4 will probably go bye bye.

Re: Picked Up This '71 Chevy Today

Leon, thats a fairly easy system.. first check make sure the motor runs, if yes, check the fluid level and whether its sludge or oil, change external filter and pick up screen (if it has one). It may just need filter and sludge drained and changed.

I think he had the spare tire mounted on it.

Thanks Dale I will test it out this afternoon. I will probably just drain the oil and replace it.

Here are a few pictures after I cleaned it up a little. I found all of the original tire tools in the pouch in the corner of the cab. The jack was in the cab too.

You are going to love the hood ornament...

Thanks Ryan. I cleaned the carpet. put a gas tank and seat in it, and replaced the drivers side arm rest with parts I had on hand over the last few days.. No luck on getting the hoist to work though. I'm looking for a leaf spring rear end for it so keep me in mind if you come across anything.

Did the motor for the pump run? If so how did the pump sound?

Dale,

I got a spark when I hooked power to the motor but it didn't turn. I imagine the motor is stuck. If it ever cools off here I will pull the motor out and see if it runs on it's own, and try turning the pump by hand.

I didn't even see it when I looked at the truck the first two times...

Yep, sounds like one of the two is frozen. I think the motor is the least expensive of the two, lets hope for that.
