won't start..........HELP

Well I finally got back on my 69 frame off project after several years. Chassie is ready. I tried to crank it yesterday for the first time. Hooked up a temp. gas tank to the existing line (that goes to the fuel pump) and poured a little gas in the carb................nothing happened.......well a small backfire.
After several tries I pulled the line going from the pump to the carb........no gas.
Does that mean I could have installed the pump wrong or something........it's new and should work.
Any ideas??????
