bought truck-opinions?

have had lots of these trucks in the past. had 3 72 swb cheyenne supers, 1 72 2wd blazer, a 72 3/4 ton highlander suburban, a 72 bb custon 10 deluxe highlander lwb, and various others. been looking for ten years for another highlander truck and finally found what i wanted. waiting for it to be shipped right now. can't wait. it is a lwb and i hate to molest an unmolested truck, but at least this way i can do it my own way. i am going to convert to a swb. anyways, was gonna put in a link to evil bay where i bought it and get opinions. campers gotta go. i showed it to my 3 year old son, who i will keep this truck for his first ride, and he asked me if i liked the house on it. i got a good laugh. other than that i think it's got lots of potential. i am looking for some parts in the parts section if anyone has any as well. here is the link:

Re: bought truck-opinions?

Nice truck! I really like the orange and white combo. If it was mine, I would toss the camper, change over to sport mirrors, and use a set of ralleys or aluminum slots. Good score.

Re: bought truck-opinions?

That is an excellent value for your money even adding in the 8 or 900. for shipping from Oregon to Texas.. I wouldn't cut an original unmolested truck to make a short box , just my .02 !!

Re: bought truck-opinions?

Welcome to the truck site from a fellow Highlander fan(see sig). What a nice original C/10 CustomDeluxe, and with the Highlander pkg.It even still has the Highlander/Monte Carlo hubcaps.I wouldn`t "molest" that one, either. Not telling you what to do,but I don`t like hearing it just the same.Since it won`t be original anyway, why not take a shortbed that`s anywhere from nothing special to,even,a prestine loaded truck and make it a Highlander if that`s what you`re after? Not trying to raise hairs, either. And,to heck with my opinion. But,wouldn`t it just plain be easier as well?I mean, the only difference between a Highlander and a Cheyenne is the Cheyenne has carpet, headliner, and the woodgrain door panel trim. You can get the plaid and do the seatcover.

Re: bought truck-opinions?

cwilli84, according to the guy listing it, by what i can tell it is a saddle tank between bed and frame rail and the filler comes off tank and you just reach in the fender well to fill.

Hey,don`t mind me.I took a cherry longbed Stepside`69 CST/20 loaded a/c big block truck and cut the frame, back 1/2ed a narrowed 4-link in,swapped in 1/2t drop spindles and slapped a shortbed on.A loaded big block long Stepside is a rare bird, ain`t it?I was lucky,I survived the lightning strike, lol.

Re: bought truck-opinions?

i asked for opinions. just cause i asked does'nt mean i'll listen. haha. i am very hard to offend. anyway, i wanted a good clean original shortbed. sometimes you have to compromise, but in the end i still want to end up with a good clean original shortbed.

We have to remember that there is a difference between rare and desireable. If rare automaticly made something desireable all these magazines and car/truck shows would be a far sight from what they are today. I personaly would have no problem butchering a LWB to build a SWB. Dollar for dollar it's a great alternative for building a SWB. It seems like all the affordable short trucks with A/C and no rust are all but gone. However LWB trucks are still turning up quite regular. I guess it's kind of like all the 2WD short trucks that have been converted to 4x4s. The 4x4s are quite rare but to a lot of people they are undesireable. I say to heck with em" do what you want as long as you are happy with the finished product!

Re: bought truck-opinions?

Yeah,I was mostly saying,if he wanted a shortbed Highlander(I was thinking that was the emphasis),it would be easier to convert a shortbed to a highlander truck than convert a Highlander longbed to a shortbed.By the time you spend the time and money you could pay more for a nice shortbed.
But,you work with what you got. There`s something to be said about that.

Re: bought truck-opinions?

everything i've ever had has been restored to perfection. i am picky (anal if you will) and it has driven me crazy trying to keep them. my highlander i had before was just a good old original truck and i had more fun in it than any of the others. as see ten said all the good ol short trucks are gone, so i'm gonna start with the long, cut it down, paint the bed, and drive the heck out of it and save it for my 3 year old for his first ride. that's what i had for my first. when he get's old enough to help work on it, i'll restore it then so he will respect it. highlanders are'nt as desirable as cheyenne's to most, but i like em better myself, just preference. but i also like shorties better, too. i'm really just a sucker for all of these trucks.

Re: bought truck-opinions?

I got no problem with restifying, but cutting a long bed down to a short isn't a good idea for resale value or posterity. That said, it is your truck and you should do what you want to it regardless of sanity.

Just make damn sure you pick the right guy to cut the frame so you don't screw it up.

Re: bought truck-opinions?

tend to disagree, will resale way better as shorty and it can be shortened and strengthened stouter than factory.

Re: bought truck-opinions?

Only if the buyer isn't interested in an original shortbed. As most folks who buy these trucks will tell you, original is much better than customized for resale value's sake. Yes, there are many buyers who don't care one way or the other, hence my advice to make sure it's done right. My guess is that given the truth told at sale time, fewer buyers would be interested since it wasn't an original. I know I would never buy one.

Re: bought truck-opinions?

You could always swap to a shortbed frame when restoring, too. That`s what I`ve done, unless cutting frame to build pro-street.Then,why chop a short frame when a much more abindant long frome will do?
I have a thing for optioned out trucks that aren`t Cheyennes,too.My Highlander has way more on it than an average Cheyenne.That makes it more obscure,IMHO:4spd tilt,tach,manual throttle,a/c,engine heater,tow hooks,aux.tank,tool`n`stowage compartment,bumper guards,custom camper,no-spin,dual batteries,AND A PLAID SEAT!!!
(none of these "come" on a Cheyenne, unless ordered)
