Hey Mud,
Thanks for the welcome back it has been forever. My truck runs perfect except for offroading then the carb loads up and floods out.

Re: Edelbrock 1406 Spring Kit Installation?Z

Mine loads up while idling in the driveway and floods out all the time if I let it run for more than a minute. My driveway is @ 25 degrees. I've called Edelbrock to ask about the spring kit but both times ( I called twice because I couldn't believe what they were telling me the first time ) I was told that the kit was to help with the flooding being caused by bouncing while wheeling and not for constant steep terrain operation. Had I looked into it a little before I bought, I would have found that these carbs are no good for use on anything other than flat ground. I love the way that the Edelbrock runs on flat ground but I should have bought a Holley, or better yet get the 6.0 liter installed!

Hollies are no better unless you put out for the off road carb.

Re: Edelbrock 1406 Spring Kit Installation?Z

The only springs I know of on Edelbrocks are the step-up springs on the metering rods. In this case under low vacuum conditions (=higher load), they cause the metering rods to move out of the jets thereby making the mixture richer.

Unless your spring kit is for the float.

I'd go to their site and download the manual.

After re-reading your posts it sounds as if you all and I are talking about 2 different things, though I would still make sure they didn't sell you the step-up spring kit.

you need spring loaded needles and seats. the same would apply for a holley. i know they are about 35 bucks for a holley. i got rid of my edelbrock long before i spent any more money on that pos. mine would load up in a hard corner flood and stall. that was always fun in traffic

Yep off road needle and seats are to prevent the bouncing. As for the flooding, you can check your float level as a high level will allow the fuel to pour over and flood it.

Re: Edelbrock 1406 Spring Kit Installation?Z

On my rock crawling blazer, I started out with an Edelbrock. I did the spring loaded needle and seats, lowered the floats, dropped the fuel pressure, (I usually run 1.5 to 2 pounds when in the rocks)etc. This carb just flat out DID NOT like angles. I then tried a 780 holley that I had. Spring loaded needle and seats, float whistles, hose with a vent connecting front and rear. Worked GREAT! I have since put the 406 into my chevelle, and threw a mild 350 into my blazer, with a stock Quadrajet. In my opinion the Q-jet is THE best carb for wheeling. I have seen rigs keep on running while standing straight up in the air. At that angle I don't thing you would have any oil around the pickup so it probably doesn't matter anyway! LOL! I have tried em all on the same rig and the Q-jet is king in the rocks!
