putting a stepside bed together?

I am about to purchase a new stepside bed. Can the bed be put together without the floor? Crazy question, but i plan on doing a sheetmetal tub and sheetmetaling the rest of the bed. Anyone see an issue with this? I cant see paying 850$ for a bedfloor that im going to cut half of it off, thanks dudes.

Re: putting a stepside bed together?

I see no reason why it wouldnt work. I have two that are off trucks now with no floors. A popular mod on the 47-54 side is the install the s10 donor floor when doing an s10 frame swap.

Im doing this on my 67. It just seems like a waste of money to buy things i dont need and/or cut up lol. I would need braces though right?

Re: putting a stepside bed together?

the bed floor kinda helps the box stay square and gives the sides ridgidity, but there's no reason you couldnt put it together with out one.
your probally gonna need alil' less than a 3/4" shim somewhere between the frame stands or the bed sides and cross sills and the floor when you do the sheetmetal floor too keep the bed aligned with the cab

Re: putting a stepside bed together?

I went with Goodmark bedsides. They are as good as GM. I did put reinforcements in where the taillights mount though, so they weren't just mounted in the sheetmetal. Very nice pieces though!

Re: putting a stepside bed together?

Your front bed panel has a brace that goes across and allso holds the steps on for the front. The rear has a brace on it allso ,with these on you can hold it all together and do what u need.I had my bed like this for a year while I was finishing up.The floor just mates it to the frame

Re: putting a stepside bed together?

You can do it you will need a shim the thickness of the bed wood at each cross member were it meets with the angle strip on each side I hope i did not confuse you! LOL ! Cause I confuse my self sometimes trying to explain things but it does work.
