After figuring out what was wrong with my tranny not shifting I took her for a test drive and did this

. Getting it fixed now. Just wanted to share.......

Bummer. That's going to set you back a couple, at least.

I need to have my front yoke replaced and shaft balanced. Estimate was about $180.00

I am kinda gettn raped on this but I need the truck.......To do both shafts ballanced and u joints replaced along with the towing I am paying just over 500. Towing was 70

Holy Crap batman!! A new shaft shouldn't cost that much. I had one built from scratch for $150. I'd shop around for a driveshaft shop and have them buid, or fix yours, then install it yourself!!

If you have a 2 piece, that may be about right. The parts will probably run you $150 to $200, labor at least $200 to $300 (welding, grinding, etc.).

I disagree. I think $150 for each shaft built from scratch is about right.
Thats what my shop charges.

Same thing happened to me on my K5 a couple of years ago. If I remeber correctly The new yoke and shaft balancing cost $75 and the new U-joints and installation cost me another $125. I was only a block from home so I just took the shaft out and drove it with the front wheels. The worst part for me was that there was no inclination that it was about to occur. No vibration, no sounds or clunking when putting into gear or anything but I was just glad I wasn't going 60 on the highway.

I think what jacked his cost up is the grinding off the old yoke, replacing with new one and welding it back up. Some shops are not equipped with welders that can do a drive shaft and they have to send it out.

It took a professional welder neighbor of mine a couple of hours to remove a yoke with a grinder, reweld the new one and grind it back down on a vehicle of mine some years back...

Yeah ...I have a two piece shaft and am replacing all the ujoints. I don't really have a problem paying that to the guy I took it to because he has helped me out in the past.

I know but hey......once it is done I will have my truck back with a new motor...rebuilt tranny and "new" drive shaft......now to get rid of the rust....get a new wiring harness ...and body off restore and I am in good shape..

Be happy the rear of it broke and fell. IF the front had broken and dropped and grabbed something, you'd be spending more money.

Did it make any kind of noise before it '86-ed?? Squeek, Clank or any other noise?

It wasn't shifting and he found the vacuum line had slipped off the modulator.

same here. on my old 80 K20 I had a pair of super duty guaranteed for life shafts made and with all new Neapco joints it came to just under $300.

You Know it was wierd....I thought I felt a flat tire in the rear but looked and saw nothing.......then after turning a corner it felt like I had a missing tire....then finally it broke free at about 10 miles per hour...thank god I wasn't going any faster.

I know me too ..but with these truck it is always something....wether it be something you want to improve or something that needs to be fixed.
