Determining original point of sale

Hi all. I have been trying to find out some history on my truck since I'm pretty sure it was purchased new locally. Unfortunately, my truck was for sale by the son of the previous owner who had recently passed, and the son did not know any information about the truck. There was also no documentation, manual, build sheet, or dealer tags. I am wondering if any of you have had luck determining what dealer your truck was originally purchased from after being in a similar scenario to mine. I used to have an old beetle, and I know with those you can send the VIN in to VW and get a birth certificate that includes what dealer the car was built for. It would be nice if GM did something similar.
