has anyone else heard this before

i was talking with an old guy (j/k) the other day about the 67-72 trucks. he was saying that when they were being built they ran out of 350 ci motors for the trucks so then they had to use a hi-perf motors. he said he has seen a few truck with vette and camaro motors. i think he full of $ hit, but maybe he is right? it would be cool if they did that and find out a guy had a hi-perf motor.

Yes I heard the same thing a few years ago. Supposedly it was in 1970 when GM was on strike. When they settled and went back to work the casting department was already behind when the strike hit.

I heard that in 69 they got so desperate the one day at the factory, they had one last 69 CST SWB sitting around without a smallblock and for some unknown reason, the last ZL1 sitting in a corner collecting dust.

Well, a couple workers scratched their heads, looked at each other, and with the types of grins on their faces that would have taken a plastic surgeon to remove, they did the unthinkable.

It's sitting in a barn somewhere just waiting to be discovered.

BOY....if that were true, wouldn't that be some kind of treasure hunt!!



That type of hype can sure make for some good stories!

So my 427 Yenko, Baldwin, Nickey, COPO 69 C10 SWB is FAKE??? WHAT????

I wouldn't doubt that it happened...I've seen stranger things come out of the GM plants back then, but most of it was just shoddy work Like, why in the F^@K would you think it was a good idea to WELD on the door hinges in 70 and up Novas?

mike... I would rather have welded on hinges, than the glued on hinges in later model GM junk. The PASSENGER side door FELL OFF on my old poS-10 Blazer. WTF is up with that?

As for the thread topic, I say BS personally.

lol really!?! we used to have one of those...im happy i didnt fall out going down the road or something..tuck and roll at 70 mph...ill pass

yeah...my truck had a zl1 in it from the factory but i sold it for $100.......

this story kinda falls under the same BS that you always here.
Every 327, is described as a corvette 327... every mystery small block is a 350... when in reality, it's normally a 305 in old stuff, and a 307 in older stuff. All big blocks are 454s and every olds is a rocket motor.
Everyone wants there variety junk, to be rare or special... when in reality, it's just junk.

Here is the kerosene......

Just to make this interesting....... My dad( Yes my dad, not someone else's dad or such) was a service manager at the GM dealership in Brunswick Ga in the 60's. GM had a plantation on one of the barrier islands and used it for an executive resort deal, so the dealership always got primo cars, L88 Vettes, 302 Z28s and such, always heavily optioned. Here comes the rub........

66 or 67 Chevy II was supposed to be the L79 327, GM exec picked it up to drive out to the plantation and the engine craps the bed. The exec was in on this project and it set him off. He and my dad yanked the motor and guess what they found....... not a 327 but a 283, which was detected immediately by Pop when he noticed the abscence of the double hump markings. Long Story short... it was traced back to the engine plant. QA tech's were involved in a scam where the would switch engines around, doctoring serial numbers. The basic concept was they would take an engine that failed inspection, swap it for a good hi po motor which would end up in the salvage pile that was open to all engine plant staff. Of course they marked the "good" bad engines and swooped them right up. The culprits logic was that the customer would be made whole upon the warranty failure replacement.

Of course take this, as with any story, with a grain of salt. But is it possible to get an engine that does not belong in your GM car, sadly it would be the opposite of what you want it to be.

I stopped in Pocola Ok. about 15 years ago to look at a green long bed '69. The old man who owned it bought it new, and had to have been atleast 80 when he bought the truck. He was almost incoherent, and I had to help him walk around the truck so he could show it to me. He kept mumbling about a damned old corvette engine in it, burn the tires as long as you cared to stay in it, etc. I wrote it off as he was just trying to "sell" the truck to the guy in the hotrod '70 stepside. Well, we finally got around to taking the lock off the chain that was attached to the hood and padlocked shut down beneath the front bumper, and there was a big block in the truck. It did have factory original aluminum intake, and 780 vacuum secondary carb, and the tonawanda stickered chrome valve covers on it that were barely legible. This old fart swore the thing was like that when he bought it. We finally got it started up and it had a nice lope to it. Well, I wasn't completely sold on the engine story, and the truck had some other problems, like him burning trash so close to the back of the truck the taillights were partially melted and the paint on the tailgate was burned off, and it had several other "old man dents" along the sides etc. We finally struck a deal on $2200 and I'd come back in a week to pick it up and pay. Well, I returned in a week to find out someone had stolen the truck and he had a heart attack/massive organ failure trying to stop them. As far as I know, the truck was never recovered.

Not a truck story - but I absolutely know of (I drove it several times) a truly scarey-fast new '65 SS "396" Chevelle which had a DEALER-Installed 435 HP tri-power 'Vette 427 swapped into it, after the original 396 engine lunched itself when it dropped a valve, when the car was just a couple weeks old.

Due to the popularity of SS 396 Chevelle's when they were first-out, the dealer couldn't easily get a stock 396 engine to replace the original, but the dealer COULD get the Vette 427 right away, so, within a week or so, it was a "factory stock" absolute monster Chevelle, way ahead of the later COPO & production 427 & 454 ones, by a couple of years.

Don't know whatever happened to the car, but if it survived, somebody would be scratching their heads over that engine, because it was a true "factory-stock" car (supposedly).

Things happened a lot like that back then, especially in the early days of the muscle-car era, and if you don't truly know a vehicle, there were some strange combo's out there which might still be found in a barn somewhere.

There is the possiblitity of certain block casting numbers being hi-po eligible blocks, but I call BS they were hi-po engines off the showroom floor.
