Re: oil is getting gone please help

I have heard that a PCV valve that isn't working will suck the oil out of your engine like crazy. Did you put in a new one when you changed the engine?

Damn that don't make no sense that oil has to be going somewhere. Have heard that about pcv valve but theres no way its sucking that much up.

I wouldn't think so either but the PCV is hooked up to a vacuum source and, so I've been told, it will suck the oil right out of your engine.

Re: oil is getting gone please help

Pull the spark plugs. Your burning oil if it's not leaking out on the ground. Keep track of what cylinders the plugs came from. If it was truely the PCV allowing it to suck oil, the cylinders that are fed by the runners nearest the vaccum port where the PCV connects should be more oily that the others.

If you only have 1 or 2 cylinders with oily plugs you might have an issue with valve seals or stuck oil control rings on the pistons. Finding stiff/brittle valve seals could lead you to worn valve guides.

While you got the plugs out you might want to go ahead a run a compression test and see if the pressure is on the low side, indicating poor ring seal (or a possible bent/burnt valve). It's pretty basic as tests go, but should give you a general overall statement of health of the engine. If you can, run a leakdown test as it would pinpoint the source of compression leakage if it's rings, intake or exhaust valves.

Re: oil is getting gone please help

PCV will suck up oil if the opposing valve cover is not ventilated. A typical culprit is due to after market valve covers not having 1.22" holes for vents.

Re: oil is getting gone please help

soak your pcv valve in some rubbing alcohol, or b-12 chem tool... tap it out with a micro fiber towel, reinstall...if it still doesnt work, put in a new pcv valve, and find out how much oil is being burnt via the spark plugs.

Re: oil is getting gone please help

Wow. That is one I haven't heard of. The PCV hoovering oil?
I don't burn or loose much oil. I do have some poor valve seals though. When I first crank it up, I get a puff of white smoke. It's gone in about 5 seconds. Doesn't happen often on warm starts.
I was thinking your rear main seal was contributing, but if it was and the exhaust was burning it off, you would surely notice that.
I think it is good advice to check the cylinders.

I get a few oily spots on my tailgate sometimes. As I mentioned, it looses really no oil. Minor seeping and valve seals. I check the tranny and rear as well. Minor seep on the tailshaft, but nothing obvious.

I was sitting on a patch of dirt one day and cranked it up. I have straight exhausts and both turn down right in front of the rear end. I noticed the big cloud of dust from the exhaust. My brain started working. When I get the spots on the tailgate, it is when I am driving just after rain has started. My exhaust kicks up the oily water off the road and plants it in a swirl right on the tailgate. Mystery oil on the tailgate solved.

What color was the build up on the plugs? Black and oily or white and crusty? If you have 3 oily plugs at least, you still are consuming oil. It's either your PCV or something more internal to the engine. Check the PCV (or just get a new one as they are dirt cheap anyway. Change the plugs out, drive it and recheck oil level after you get some miles on it. If the oil consumption is still happening, do a compression test.

I speak from experience. I had a 307 in my Nova that burned 1-2 quarts between tanks of gas. The poor old 307 was just flat worn out. It would have needed a full rebuild to tame it's tendancy to burn oil in addition to gasoline. I stuffed a 350 in it to fix that...

Re: oil is getting gone please help

One thing to check is the valve seals. If they are umbrella or positive viton seals, sometimes they will come loose from the guide and start moving up and down with the valve stem. When this happens, the up and down motion causes the valve seal to act like a pump and push oil past the guides.

Re: oil is getting gone please help

How old is this motor? When was it installed? A few years back there was a batch of crate motors that had issues with rings not seating that did this. Mechanics know about it, Service writers do also, and LIE about it.
I had one just like that. It used 2 quarts in 30 miles! They replaced it under warranty after they tried to blame it on everything they could make up.

There is no way you are pulling 2 quarts through the PCV under normal driving conditions. What does the bottom of the intake look like? What about the carb, it is oily? What about the PCV hose? You can easily check a PCV to see if it works by rattling it. It is just a one way valve.

If you want to verify that oil is or is not coming through the PCV you can put a air compressor oil/water separator inline and see what is coming through the line.
