fuel tank install ?s

i've got to put a new tank in my '77. being that im planning on keeping it original, and i have a brand new saddle tank, im going with that. my frame mount brackets are rusted, and i have new ones, along with new straps to go on it. are regular hex bolts acceptable for mounting the straps? the factory straps are riveted. also, the brackets have insulators on them that have deteriorated over the last 30 years. would it be acceptable to take a bicycle inner tube and cut it up to make my own insulators? thanks in advance.

Re: fuel tank install ?s

you can use nuts bolts and lockwashers to bolt the straps to the frame. personally i used grade 8 bolts that i got in lowes.. you can also put rubber between the strap and tank if you want. i painted mine up nice with rustoleum black and reinstalled the old rubber plastic junk that was in the old setup..
its easiest if you leave some play in the straps so you can center everything up nice and you wanna support the tank and hook everything up before you bolt the strap to the frame... it can be a fun job

Rusty

Before installing a new tank - make sure that bolt heads are not in contact with tank. Over time due to vibration bolt head may work its way through tank. You can use roofing paper as an insulator.
Dropping a tank is not that difficult - just make sure that old tank is empty. Wear safety glasses - there will be plenty of dirt coming down on you.
Here are couple of photos of my starboard side tank swap and replace.
