Gutting Doors - Need Help

Hey Gents!

How's it going. I scored some perfect factory 91 suburban doors (Manual Mirrors), and I am disassembling them so that I can paint the jambs because the paint/prep seems to come out much better that way. I will just prime the outside for now because it will be another year before I'm ready to paint the whole exterior.

Now to my question: I managed to get everything out, but I'm having trouble removing the exterior handle. I removed both 3/8 bolts, but their is a latch and rod preventing it from coming out. How do I get this handle off?

Thanks-

BLUE SQUARE

Re: Gutting Doors - Need Help

You can also:

1. remove the two bolts just like you did
2. push the black door release button all the way in and wiggle the handle free of the hole in the door
3. get a light and look in the door along the outside edge until you see the rod that is still attached from the door handle to the inside release mechanism
4. get a long screwdriver and push the clip down that is holding the bottom of that rod to the door release mechanism....you will not need to remove the clip totally, just about half way until the rod comes out of the clip

You might need to use pliers or some force with your hand if you can reach that rod but it will come out of that clip.

Then you just lift the handle and the rod will come out with the handle from the bigger hole near the door edge on the door exterior.

Hope it works for you. Antigov's way will work as well, the rod stays inside the door that way.

Re: Gutting Doors - Need Help

Thank you Gentlmen.

I actually used a long flat head screw driver to slide down the clip on the latching mechanism like Gordonr1973 suggested. It was a breeze. Now my doors are gutted.

I will start preping them for paint today. I also removed the rubber impact strip which came on these 91 suburban doors too. Man that glue is tough to get off. I razored it down as far as I could without damanging the surface.

Does anybody have a good technique for removing this double side adheasive???

Thanks again,

BLUE SQUARE

Goof off or goo-b-gone will remove the adhesive.
It takes a bit of doing though...

I read somewhere that WD-40 or brake cleaner work well for this.

The brake cleaner might be the ticket. We'll see how it goes.

Brake fluid will take off paint.
I've never had good luck with WD-40

Don't use brake cleaner if possible.

You might be able to get a rubber adhesive removal wheel (same idea as a wire brush wheel that can be used in a drill) at an autobody supply store that will take that stuff off without damaging paint.

3m 08498 quart size metal jug is an excellent adhesive remover. Use it at work all the time
