Lube a spedometer cable?
Good afternoon everyone. I recently installed a new spedometer cable and I am wondering should I put some kind of lubrication in the cable housing? I have avoided any highway cruising 70+ MPH because I don't want to ruin it.
If yes, what kind of lube and how to do it? Thank you for your time! Keith |

Re: Lube a spedometer cable?
autoparts store has speedometor cable lube// it's dry graphite based and actually polishes the cable and inside the housing for resistance free spinning

Re: Lube a spedometer cable?
^ x2... I have used lightweight lithium grease without problems, but graphite is the way to go.

Re: Lube a spedometer cable?
If you have problems getting the graphite into the sheath, add some rubbing alcohol and create a good mixture. Use a squirt bottle to get the liquid into the cable, the alcohol will act as a carrier and evaporate shortly after installation leaving behind the graphite as a lubricant.

Re: Lube a spedometer cable?
I always pull the cable from the back of the odometer. Then slid the center part out of the sheath. Lube. Re-install.
Never use that white lithium lube in the north country where it gets cold. That stuff freezes.
