Transmission shift pattern?

Hello anyone who's reading this. This is my first post. I have a 67 step with the original 327. I bought the truck a little over a year ago and am now just gettin into restoring it. My question is, the tranny is a 4 speed, that is geared pretty low, and has a shift pattern i've never seen before on a gm of this vintage. r 1 3 Does anyone have any insight into what kind of tranny this is or 2 4 why it has this shift pattern? Thx

the shift pattern didn't come out like i thought it would. its r in top left then first directly next and 2 below and the rest is explainable.

Is the shifter a Hurst?

Had a '79 Z28 that had that shift pattern.

Yes, it is a Hurst shifter. When I bought the truck the guy said the tranny was out of a 70 something trans am. I honestly didn't believe him cuz the truck was at a low price for the condition it was in and if it was a muncie (i believe that was what trans am's came with) he should've been asking for alot more.

not right now, the engine and tranny are still in the truck while I build a new 400 for it

I'm a complete noobie here as well so take this with a grain of salt, but my understanding is that the SM420 heavy duty transmission that GM used through the mid-60s had that shift pattern, with R up and over to the top left and then the standard H for 1-4. You say yours is geared pretty low - could it maybe be the 420 with granny low?

Does it have a high hump with the shifter coming right out of the top? If yes, then maybe you've got a 420 in there?

i agree with camrycurt if its that low of a tranny its probably a sm420, my truck has a sm465 with the reverse over and down to the right thats how i found out if it was a sm420 or a sm465.

In the early '80s I drove a work van with reverse in the top/left position.
My two personal vehicles had first gear in that position.
I would almost back into someone on a daily basis when the traffic light
would turn green.

It could be a A833, didnt they come with a hurst shifter???? If you take pictures of it itll be easier to tell.

I thought the 465 reverse was down to the left and the 420 down to the right. I think the Borg Warner 4 speeds in the '70's TA'S and Camaro's were up and to the left. Best thing would be to get a pic or numbers off the tranny.
