Smile And it begins....Here is my starting point

Hi Gang,

What a great site and a true testament to what awesome trucks the 67-72 Chevy Trucks are. (and apparently awesome/helpful owners too)

I've loved these trucks ever since I was a kid when I'd sit on top of my Dad's 1970 Chev C10 truck with my freinds as boys and we'd pretend to be driving to some type of dilemma where we'd save the day!!

Well my Dad's truck is long gone now. (Probably beer cans by now with the salt and corrosion we get up here in Canada). For years I've been throwing around the idea of bringing one of these trucks back to life. I finally made the plunge, and on our 11th anniversary my wife and I went for a trip to Maine, USA to pick my new truck up. (Well you know how the 1st Anniversary is Paper and the 2nd is Cotton.........wells boys it seems the 11th is short box chevy's!!!!!!!!!!! )

Here's the scoop on the truck:

1970 Chev C10 SWB Fleetside

Body
Blue paint badly blistered and peeling
Lots of mud in spots but overall appears fairly solid
The rockers, firewall, and under cab supports have major rust problems.(see below)
Wood bed that needs replaced or refurbished

Suspension
No PS and PB
Cracked frame in the rear with some rough patch work.
I can see daylight through the shocks..

Motor
250 CID "Fireball" Six.....Sweet! (Not)
Don't worry that will get rectified

Plans
I don't have a huge wad of cash I can throw at it so I'll have to do most of the work myself and little by little. It will be a long term thing but I hope to get it fixed up enough to be a daily driver for now.

Not sure which way to go because I really like them both. Either I'll,
1) "pimp it out" lowered with a crazy engine, paint job, big rims/tires or
2) Keep it fairly stock looking with a crazy engine and paint job.

Anyway, I'll try and post a few PICs here so you can see my starting point.

Ps: I can't believe this site exists! It rocks!! It has so many tips and information for neebees like me. Thank you guys, keep it up.

I'll try posting pics...hope this works:

I vote stock with a crazy engine! Just make sure to move the motor mount brackets forward; too many people with 6 to 8 conversions forget to do that and have firewall issues.

Re: And it begins....Here is my starting point

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the Welcome. Glad to be here. I know I'm in good company. I forgot to tell you it's still not running. Needs new points, I've quickly found out that you can't just walk into your local AutoParts store and expect them to stock parts for a 36 year old vehicle. (Hopefully next week we'll spark some life into her)

Hey JC, I didn't realize how cool the Burbs were until I seen some photos on this site. "BlueGoose" (I think) has a nice one. Maybe the next project.

Trailzen, Brantford, nice!..........The home of the Great One #99 Wayne Gretzky. I live not to far from you in Grimsby, Ontario.

97Silv5.7, Maine is truely a very beautiful State, and the people seem very friendly there. The guy I bought the truck from is a super nice guy. Alien Auto in Richmond, ME. He said he's selling about 20 more 67-72 trucks as he brokering an estate. Might be a good contact for you. His name is John V.

Werewolf, thanks for the tip on the conversion, I've swapped out engines before but never done the 6 to 8 thing. I'll do extra research before I embark.

I'm still torn between the stock look and the lowered pimped out look.......If it were your project, what would you do?

Congrats on the 11 years and the "anniversary gift"

Instead of points, try an HEI distributor - they're fairly cheap ($40-70) and your distributor may have other issues. Do a search on them if you're interested, it was the first thing I did for my truck an it smoothed out an incureable idle.
