What do you think about this little beast?

I looked at a '67 short fleet today - it has a 327, (good chance it's the original motor, not heads) 12 bolt rear end, 4 speed on the floor, hacked in (had a 3 on the tree) original paint, very little rust, very straight. He wants $4900 but wanted to see what you guys think. Here are some pix.

Here's some more pix - any input on what you guys think it's worth would be helpful. It's what I am looking for.

Better than alot I have seen. But I dont know about 4900. But I am in arkansas where trucks grow on trees.

If you buy it can I have the valve covers?

Re: What do you think about this little beast?

Seems to be fairly clean but 4900 is high imo. I would say 2500-3000 tops, but california is a different market.

Re: What do you think about this little beast?

I think its even a bit high for Cali as well. I see tons of trucks for sale every day (always on the lookout for that "Great" deal) and you can get a pretty decent truck for $5K - $7K... Looks pretty rough for $4900 to me, I think maybe $3500 to $4000 max IMO

but it's just my 1st impression.

Think of it in terms of it's value to you. Are you looking to end up with a show truck, or just something to haul hay between barns, or have you just always had a fondness for these particular trucks and you're in the mood for a "project" to tinker with?

Try building a tentative parts and costs list of things you're certain you'll be doing to it in the next year or so. If it's reasonable and well within your budget when including the purchase price and shipping if required, then go for it. Worst you can loose is a few grand and you're likely to get that much fun out of it just working on it.

One final thought, I think the 67 short fleets are the prettiest of all the 67-72s, mainly because of the hood angle. The small rear window makes it more desirable. This one already has a V8 drivetrain that would just love to get upgraded to a 383/4-speed.

For what it's worth.....

No more than $4000.00. It is a solid truck from what I see.

Re: What do you think about this little beast?

It is a nice truck and looks solid but the guy has obviously done some work to it and I am always skeptical of a truck thats spare tire carrier is held on by zip ties (as I should be because that is the type of thing I would do )

I would offer 3,500 if you really want it. You can do alot better for 5k around here.

Re: What do you think about this little beast?

I`d pay it,try for less.It is high for condition. Not that you can`t do good with that. But,a few more bucks and you`re in the $5-6K range and trucks are much nicer.I`m looking at a $3,500 truck.I mean, isn`t $3,500 a decent amount of money for an old truck that hasn`t had money poured into it?
Somehow bring the guy around, without insulting him,to what his truck is really worth and it could be yours.

Even 3 grand seems high to me too. But you are in California where everything is higher.

Those valve covers are original 7-fin corvette aren't they...? You could recoupe some $ there. Check out some vette parts websites...

I noticed the valve covers, too. If the holes are staggered, the heads are early, too. If not, the covers are '58 and up.

Re: What do you think about this little beast?

Looks like a good base to start off of, price is a little high IMHO. I would think more in the $3000-$3500 range. Shouldn't deter you from talking with seller more though, I had a similar situation with mine wanted it but he was a little high on the price. A stack of cash is a rather good persuader.

Re: What do you think about this little beast?

im not positive but the way that alternator looks i don't think it is mounted into the head. looks like its mounted on the manifold were the generator would go on an old manifold. i one had a 57 chevy and thats kinda how i remeber it clear out on the end of the bracket in front.

Re: What do you think about this little beast?

That seems a little high. If youre looking to spend that kinda money for a truck, then keep looking. I have a friend that has 7 trucks for sale and the worst one is in the same shape as that, and the nicest one is the same price!

Re: What do you think about this little beast?

I'm always prepared to pay more to save in the long run! This truck would pay dividends when it comes to body and paint. You want this type of truck, then go for it. I would offer $3000.00 and see where that takes the deal. You can always pay $4900.00 and get it. I think the guy will take $3500.00 to $4000.00 for it. If you think $3000.00 is a good deal your paying $1900.00 more to meet his price and that buys sqaut when it comes to body & paint!

Check the heads out. Vette valve covers had staggard mounting holes in 57 and in some 58 to 60 models as well they were 9 finned, later models had 7 fins and non staggard holes. You may have vette heads on that engine.

esll.

Here's a little better picture of the valve cover - they don't look staggered to me, but I don't know much about them.

Ok, the top holes would be closer together then the bottom holes. (See picture.) If this was a Corvette 63 to 67 327 with higher hp engine it would have aluminium valve covers not tin. Holes would be straight across from each other .... top and bottom would be the same distance a part. Pass valve cover does it have a hairline flaw running verticaly straight across by the "o" in the Corvette script on the valve cover? Can't tell by the picture if this flaw exists or not.

As far as carb is concerned this could have been changed for various reasons by POs.

If you get the #s off the block PM me and I will decipher them for you and tell you if this is a Corvette block.

Right now we're at a standstill on the price, and the vehicle is an hour and a half away, but he was gonna get me the numbers off the motor, so when I get those I'll post 'em.
