What's the diff?

The PO of my '62 had installed a TH350 Trans and rear end from another truck. I'm trying to get the e-brake working and would like to know which year/model truck this rear end is from so I can buy a set of e-brake cables for it. As you can see in the pics, the PO also cobbed up a set of shock mounts, which I will change later. Can someone tell me what this rear end came from?

Re: What's the diff?

Looks like a 12 bolt from a 73+ truck. You can tell because it has the mounting pads for a leaf spring

It has the track bar. It's a 65+ trailing arm rearend.

Re: What's the diff?

Yea, the shock mounts were one of the worst bits of work I've found on the truck. Looking forward to getting them squared away.

This looks very similar to what I have. Do you recall what you used for e-brake cables? Could a set for a '65 be made to work?

Re: What's the diff?

I'll see about getting you some pics of mine this week.
But yes, I used the cables that were on the rearend.
I also kept the stock 62 shock mount locations.

No, the photo makes it look like it might, but it's actually about a half inch away. Thanks for mentioning it.

because of where the track bar mounts on the side of the pumpkin its a 1965 12 bolt rear end you would do really well for your self to if you got the ECE adjustable Track Bar Kit .. if you can its one of the best .... so to answer your initial question i would say if you got the cables for a 65 it would work . however i dont know if they would work with a diff year truck like say a 61-62 i dont know if changes were made then or not

Re: What's the diff?

Yes the shock mounts are backwards. If you need a stock bar mount for the axle I got one. It goes on the axle tube to run a stock style long bar.

Should the shocks mount to the plates under the axle housing u-bolts? And should they be flipped around so the shocks mount behind the axle?

How is the stock bar mount different than what's on my truck now?

The stock bar is longer and it mounts on a welded bracket on the axle tube it self . Not the ear of the pumpkin...

Re: What's the diff?

Here is the factory set up. The shock mounts should face rear and in.

Re: What's the diff?

personally, I wouldn't do the factory track bar. you'd have to weld it to the axle. I would mount an adjustable track bar. there are several different type.

I agree and the ECE kit is the best one out Imo. Here is the link you want the super track bar kit. http://www.earlyclassic.com/catalog....20track%20bars

um if you look i addressed the ebrake cable issue ... after that we were trying to give some additional info that would be helpful ... just sayin and as far as whats wrong with his ? the track bar on a 62 is LONGER and mounted in a much different spot than a 65 they have done some mucking it up to make that set up fit in his 62 ... i had the same issue in mine the PO put a 62 diff in my 65 and even bent the track bar to get it to fit in my 65 to which i had no idea of until i had to get a new diff and bought one for a 65 well guess what the track bar from the old diff 62 did not fit . and i had to buy the ECE kit .. same thing would apply im sure to using a 65 in a 62

Re: What's the diff?

From his pic the track bar mod looks pretty clean..... BUT the shocks WELL can we say bubble gum and bailing wire? ... as for the 65 cables they should fit the backing plates and and brakes them self's BUT will they fit the cable mounts on the 62? May or May not then NO intermediate brake cable shown in 62 SO most likely the 65 cables will NOT match up to your 62 .... I have a 63 GMC 1/2 ton with a 67/69 3/4 ton rear the 69 cables worked on the axle and the cable mounts on the truck BUT I had to have 2 intermediate cables custom made to transition to the 63 set up on the truck

Re: What's the diff?

I welcome and appreciate advice on anything about this rear end set up. I'm just learning what it is, and would now like to learn what can or should be done to make it right.

BTW, the gum and bailing wire comment was overly kind. I was thinking more along the lines of hammered dog crap.

Is there a benefit to running the shocks behind the axle? I was considering replacing the crap mounts, but other than reducing the angle, putting them pretty much back where they are now.
