Motor Flushing

Ordered a new aluminum radiator for my 66 and after pulling the old radiator out and seeing all the rusty dust in the hoses and some near the water pump, I'd like to flush the thing out before I put in the new radiator. What is the best way to go about this? Any input is appreciated. Have a great weekend!

Re: Motor Flushing

There is only one way to backflush your system, remove thermostat housing and also bottom radiator hose, affix a water hose with air hose if equiped and blow both water and air through the bottom hose outlet up through the motor, it would help if your engine is kinda warm and use a good detergent prior.

Re: Motor Flushing

In addition to what purebred said, it's a big help if you can remove the block drain plugs which are near the bottom of the block. That is where heavy stuff settles. Better assured you get everything out of the block that way too.

Re: Motor Flushing

I have used this stuff and it removes rust. If i remember this is the stuff GM uses to remove rust on the 2.8 and 4.3 v6 that had a casting sand problem

Question Re: Motor Flushing

Hey guys,
I have this same question with one exception: my radiator has a large crack which only allows me to fill it half-way. I am going to replace it with a new aluminum radiator, but want to flush the block prior.

I would like to do a good job at flushing the block before installing the new radiator. It seems that it would be best to run a cleaner and warm up the block before flushing. But I have already got my rad removed.

Should I re-install my old rad. fill as much as it will hold (about 1/2) run some type of good cleaner and then flush the block?

*Also I don't know when the last time the system was flushed, but I know it's been at least 12 years.

Re: Motor Flushing

When I had a problem, I ran a bottle of CLR and just water in the car for a bit.

Calcium
Lime
Rust

All sorts of stuff came out.

Re: Motor Flushing

My first thought was NO! Not even with a plunger! But your plumber would sure be scratching his head!
