welded steering wheel

So i bought a 67-68 steering wheel from a member and I go to put it on and before I can do that I find out that the PO had welded the steering wheel to the threaded shaft that goes through the column. My question is could I just pull that shaft out and place another in its place or would the whole column have to be replaced? Oh and the column is not a tilt, I felt that one coming.

Re: welded steering wheel

I don't see any reason why you can't replace the shaft, but it may be a challenge unwelding the wheel and shaft...

Re: welded steering wheel

I dont think I wanna fool with unwelding the wheel off because then I would have to re-thread the shaft. I much rather replace it.

So if anyone out there would like to donate a tilt column to fix my problem I wont be mad...trust me.

Looks to me like someone mushroomed the end of the shaft from beating on it and couldn't get the nut on so they just welded it. If you take a small grinder or cutoff wheel I don't think it would take much to cut through the weld. Before you try to pull the shaft out I would remove the neutral safety switch. If the shift tube moves much it may break it. If you have or can find a complete column that may be the way to go...

Re: welded steering wheel

Well, thats a little "spooky", but not as bad as one of the buds back in the day? Dude pulls up in a 53 f-100, says "hey lets go for a ride"......manual steering in that old straight axle truck, & what was WELDED to the shaft? If you havent guessed it, it was a rusty old pair of vise bites! well Dave, you have a cool truck.....but I dont have time to ride in it I would replace the shaft also, just pull the coluom as a unit & take it apart (no biggie)....crazyL

Re: welded steering wheel

So you need the entire length of the shaft for the column (making sure I understand correctly)? Then you plan to install that into your column?

Anyone know if there's a difference between the shaft from an auto column vs. a standard/3spd shift column? Reason I ask is I should have one out of a standard shift column in my garage.
