Re: windshield wipers

I haven't bought one yet but if you have all the different hardware the truck parts companies sell a replacement electric motor. They seem specific to year so I would assume it just takes the place of the original motor and the rest of the parts are fine. I'm sure someone on the forum has bought one and can chime in, I think they are in the $150 price range you mentioned

Re: windshield wipers

I was lucky enough to find an original electric one in a GMC utility truck years ago. I do not know if all GMC's had them or if it was a option. Someone here has a conversion that uses SUV back window wiper motors. Might be for an AD truck but bracket would be easy to make. Search should pick up the thread. Before my factory one I used one out of a 62 truck and made my own bracket and modified the arms to work.

Re: windshield wipers

electric wipers were an option in 59.
my 59 panel had them, i transferred them over to my 58.
direct bolt in if you can find one in a junk yard.

Re: windshield wipers

After the wiper motor in my 59 died, I looked into replacement wipers. I saw aftermarket wipers at the various vendors for around~$150 or so, and I also looked at RainGear.
I already have raingear in my 41 Cad street rod and I liked the setup. The Raingear wiper was a little more than double the other guys, but I have learned my lesson about buying cheap stuff.
I have to say that I am very impressed with the Raingear wiper. Easy install, quality all the way through, including nicely detailed instructions.
The price difference includes all new wiper mechanisms under the dash. I only reused my wiper arms and bezels.
I had one small glitch on the install, so I called the day after Thanksgiving, not expecting to get anyone. Not only did they solve the problem for me over the phone, they followed up on Sunday to see if the wipers were working. Nice customer service!

Re: windshield wipers

I picked up an original electric two speed setup off of EBay for $110 that came with the mounting bracket and control cable. It bolted right in where the vacuum moter was. I've seen a few on Ebay since I bought mine. It appeared to be the least expensive and easiest way to get electric wipers.

Re: windshield wipers

yes i will be tearing it out again and switching to electric i probably wont see much rain with it either. its just knowing that the switch is there and works when you turn it .. trying to keep it as much original except running gear , but i do like new updated parts , seams ebay has good deals or craiglist when you broke then you get cash in your pocket and the prices raise over night ,,

Re: windshield wipers

Can anyone post picture of the RainGear motor assembly mounted (or maybe even a factory unit). My truck had no dash no wiper assembly, just trying to make sure I leave room for everything.

Re: windshield wipers

Anyone ever consider using an electric vacuum pump on the vacuum motors? The vacuum wipers are extremely simple and often last for years. Their downfall is decreasing effectiveness with increasing engine load. IME if you give them a consistent power source they aren't too bad.
