Speedometer Troubles

Im having problems getting the speedometer to work in my daughter's 1954 Chevy pickup. We replaced the gauge and the cable, but it still didnt work. I can get the gauge needle to work by connecting the cable to a drill, but no luck when its connected to the transmission. I disconnected the cable from the gauge and left it on the transmission and drove the truck and it didnt spin inside the cable. So I know something is wrong on the transmission side.

Anyone know what part can be replaced on the transmission to fix this?

Re: Speedometer Troubles

most gm transmission have a drivegear housing similar to this held in with 1 bolt and a clip

chances are just the small gear in the housing is stripped or worn slap out
if the big gear on the tail shaft is gone the whole tail shaft housing needs to come out

this is the 2 gears meshed together

google your trans speedo drive gear as i have no idea what trans your using

Re: Speedometer Troubles

I'm going to assume that the truck is original Answer is still the same in that probably the drive gear is stripped.

Figure out how to take the housing that holds the speedometer drive out and pull it out and see what it looks like They can strip the gears or the inside where the cable goes can be stripped out.
