Got a free Super Powershot plate system - advice?

Any advice? Never ran nitrous before. I was thinking go for the 150hp shot? Crazy? I've got an older sbc thats freshly built. Thumpr cam(noise maker), .60 over, stock heads, Performer carb and intake. It came with a bottle opener and heater too.

Would greatly appreciate any advice. Cory

the best thing you can do is read! start small...nitrous is safe as long as you dont lean out. fuel system needs to be up to snuff...find someone in your area that is doing it

What type of pistons are in the engine. Cast, hyperuetectic, or forged? That will determine how much you can spray safely. It will also be beneficial to have a timing retard, so that the timing can be retarded when the N2O is injected.

Re: Got a free Super Powershot plate system - advice?

For 150 I would start with 6 psi on fuel and take 6 degrees of timing out . Ease into it and add a degree and ease the fuel pressure down to 5.5 and/or work your way up on bottle pressure . Here is what NOS called for :

Your combination may vary. These guidelines are suggested as a safe starting point in tuning.
H.P Jetting Fuel Quality Ignition Timing Spark Plug
Level N20 / Fuel Heat Range
100 47 / 53 92+ octane pump gas 2° ignition retard Standard
125 55 / 61 92+ octane pump gas
with octane booster
2 to 4°
ignition retard
Standard to 1 heat
range colder
150 63 / 71 92+ octane pump gas 4 to 6° ignition retard 1 to 2 ranges colder
with octane booster
175 73 / 82 or 100+ octane (R+M/2) 6 to 8° ignition retard 2 to 3 ranges colder
racing fuel
*At the 73/82 (jets not included in kit) jetting level, the Super Powershot nitrous solenoid is flowing near maximum

Re: Got a free Super Powershot plate system - advice?

or you could sell it all to me so I can put it on my caddy...Ive been looking for one seems the plate set ups are getting hard to find with the efis alot of the new systems are dry and use the computer to correct the lean factor.....

DO NOT LET IT LEAN OUT one sneeze and bad stuff happens expecially if your running a Holley ( takes out the power valve) so do all your home work then find someone to work with...NOS is not flamable but pluming the extra fuel pump and running the lines needs to be neat and safe

Re: Got a free Super Powershot plate system - advice?

I'm a nitrous guy too, my camaro and I are addicts.

Start small, don't go straight to the 150. Like said above, pistons are going to be the determining factor in HP limits. If you've got cast pistons, you're in trouble---don't go above a 100 shot. If they are hyper pistons, you can get away with up to a 150 with a good tune and correct ring gaps.

It's an old wivestale with nitrous that lean is to be avoided at all costs and rich is safe. You can absolutely burn stuff up if it goes real lean (it'll slow down before that happens), but almost all nitrous related engine failures are from either too much fuel, too much timing, or both. If you run it too fat, fuel will get pulled down into the ringlands.....and when that fuel ignites it'll lift the ringlands and you'll start getting oil in the chamber. Once that happens it cannot be saved, won't be long and you'll have pistons that look like they were hit with a blowtorch. Start small on the shot, be conservative with the timing and READ THE PLUGS to tune it.

Go to the nitrous section on yellowbullet.com and read read read. There are some very smart guys that are very helpful in there. Both Monte Smith and Steve Johnson (big time nitrous tuners) hang out in there.

Your best bet is to call monte smith he is the NOS guru and he can point you in the right direction. but I would keep it small with cast pistons. 256-783-3418 He is the head tech guy for nos and a great guy. He sells some parts at a deal also.
