Vortec heads on 3892657 small block 327?
I'm trying to build my 327 up a little and have heard a lot of great things about vortec heads. I know that the camel hump heads are typically overrated, so I'm looking into vortec, but I wasn't sure what I should be looking for. Will they bolt on to my 327? I've got a 650 cfm Edelbrock carb and know that I have to get an intake manifold that is appropriate for the heads I end up with. The machine work, balance job, and cam work is being done by a pro, so I don't really have any numbers there. Mostly just concerned with mounting the vortec heads to my '67 327 block, and finding out what that would mean for the rest of my build. Thanks guys!

They will bolt right on...they are 64cc so make sure tha piston are matched for atleast 9.5:1 compresion for a street motor.

You can deck the heads up to 45 thousandth, To get down to 55cc's.
Also, Punch out the push rod holes. For more clearance.Try to get the heads with the 3 spikes on the end. This means the valves are already triple cut, And will run better on pump gas. Spike

Awesome, thanks for the advice. I'd like to avoid spending too much on customizing the heads, and it sounds like there will be plenty of performance boosting for my needs. I'd like to buy new, does any one have a suggestion for where to buy or what model number I should be looking for on these vortec heads?

Re: Vortec heads on 3892657 small block 327?
These are a good deal.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-151124/ I bought used heads for $75, then bought this valve upgrade kit... http://www.competitionproducts.com/H...ductinfo/8511/ Had the heads cleaned and checked for cracks, there were 2 cracks but they were repairable for $40, then a valve job was done. Which cost around $200 I believe. Also had to buy new valve covers and bolts. I used this intake... http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-226018/ Got it running this past new years and it has loads of power. It'll smoke my 32" tires no problem. And thats without any real tuning on the carb or distributor. I'm glad I made the upgrade. You might also consider any of the other after market heads though too. You can get the same or better performance and not have to replace the intake. That's if you already had a good intake for it. Good luck with your build.

I'm planning on just buying an Edelbrock performer intake that matches, just trying to get a bead on the heads first. Thanks for the links.

Re: Vortec heads on 3892657 small block 327?
Just talked to a mechanic who was telling me that true vortec heads won't mount the same way. He said that the mounting bolts go in at a different angle, not 90 degrees like the old stock heads. Has anyone actually used true vortec heads on an actually 1967 small block? I'd hate to spend a few hundred dollars on heads that won't mount to my numbers correct block. Thanks!

Re: Vortec heads on 3892657 small block 327?
The heads mount to the block just fine.
The INTAKE has a different mounting pattern than a standard pre-90s manifold does, it only takes 8 bolts instead of 12 and they go into the heads at a different angle than the old style of intake.

Re: Vortec heads on 3892657 small block 327?
The mechanic is wrong. They have the same bolt pattern. The only difference is how the intake bolts mount which might be what he was talking about with angles of bolts. There is no change in how the heads bolt on your 67 327 than a 350 a few years later. In fact the 350 and 327 used the same casting numbers for a while. This swap has been done thousands of times.

Re: Vortec heads on 3892657 small block 327?
The L31 Vortec heads will bolt onto any Gen I small block. Your 327 isn't any different than any other Gen I small block built from 1955 thru 2002. The main difference with using the Vortec heads is the different intake bolt pattern as already mentioned.

Re: Vortec heads on 3892657 small block 327?
Right on. I knew that I'd have to buy an intake manifold that matched vortec heads. I must have confused what the mechanic was trying tell me. Thanks for setting me straight guys. Now I can gather my components and get on with this build.

Would he run into a problem with the accessory hole on the front of the heads?

Re: Vortec heads on 3892657 small block 327?
Awesome. I'm really excited to finally give this old truck the powerplant it deserves. Vortec heads, matching edelbrock intake, and the 4 bbl 650 cfm edelbrock carb I've already got for it. The suspension, steering, and electrical are all brand new, and it's got a 700r4 transmission too. Best part is that it's still dinged up and flat black, haha. Sleeper.

Re: Vortec heads on 3892657 small block 327?
I'm not sure yet. Once you go beyond bolt-on components, I get a little lost. What would be the best fit for this type of setup? I want to get what I can out of it without losing any reliability. It's still going to be used as a truck, and I don't have the money or the need to turn this engine into anything drastic.

Re: Vortec heads on 3892657 small block 327?
For a good cam, I would suggest looking at the Comp Cams Extreme 4x4 cams. Give comp's tech line a call and tell them what you have and how you intend to use it. Be prepared to give then all the pertainent info on your truck. In addition to the engine specs, transmission type, rear end gear ratio, and tire size in diameter.
