Dash Mounted Shifter

Hey Guys,
Going for a little custom touch on my 64 Longbed Step for the interior. I am going to do an engine and tranny swap and I will be installing a Turbo 350 tranny. I want to install a dash mounted shifter similar to what you find on a 67 corvair in the heater plate left of the radio location. Anyone try this or seen it? Ideas?? Thanks in advance !

I've never seen it but a dash shifter sounds really cool. I've got one in my Toyota Sienna (don't laugh!) and I really dig the short reach shifter on the dash.

Did the Corvair have a 3 speed trans? I thought they just had Powerglides.

Dodge and Amc had pushbutton dash shifter's in the 60's

I`ve seen a few dash mounted shifter in motor homes, usually on a dodge chassis. all you would need is the shifter and cable.

Yep, that's what I've found is the dodge setup.. Now I jut have to find one and do some modifications.. I think it will be fairly unusual and unique.. If I can get the fit and finish to look right.. And not a hack job..

Automatic Corvairs all had Powerglides with no "park". You had to use the Parking Brake every time. There probably wouldn't be enough travel for a TH350 and the detents would be in the wrong place, plus the shifter was built into the instrument panel so you'd have to fab something to fit the truck. Your best best is the motorhome route.

I think I'll go the RV route, but anyone got ideas where to look? Nothing on eBay or any easily searchable item.. Anyone know of RV scrapyards in Atlanta area?

You can find them in the 1965-1968 Dodge A-100 & A120 vans. I had one in my 66 A100. They are for three speed auto's & work with a cable to the trans. Seem to remember the cable bolted to a bracket on the driver side of the trans, when you moved the shifter the cable got longer or shorter & shifted the trans.

When I switched the van to 3 on the tree, I tried to remove the cable shifter but it left a large hole in the dash. I put the auto shifter back & place & rigged a spring to keep the handle tight. To confuse people, I would shift the column shift, then shift the auto shift @ each gear change. If they got confused & they always did, I would explain it was a standard automatic.

Probably as scarce as hens teeth now but 70's AM General mail trucks had them on the dash and they were shifting 3 speed torque flites.

I looked at one yesterday. it`s in a scrap yard about 1 hr north of me. it would be about 2 hrs for you.

You might try searching under "Morse Controls". Back in the 70's I bought special shifters for the Peterbilts that were ordered with Allison automatic transmissions. They are also very common in boats, and there are many different varieties and styles to pick from. Some are surface mounted, other designs could easily be mounted behind the panel with just the stick visible to the user.

on my 46 I put a floor shift automatic column out of a 70s chevelle The cuff below key rotates and has a place to hook up shift linkage at bottom I simply rotate the cuff to put in gear and basicly have no shifter at all Good theft deterrent and gives people something to scratch their head about when they cant see a shifter
